I finished The Likeness by Tana French this morning. I loved it and would go so far as to say I preferred it to In the Woods. I picked up and began The Bottoms by Joe R. Lansdale and it is pulling me right in.

I am reading The Likeness by Tana French. It is her follow up to In the Woods, and so far I prefer it.

Finished In the Woods last evening...will post a review as soon as....now, to find my next victim.........

... i'll fix my rice & greens. it's supposed to be cold and.....snow!!!....yipes. another couch potato day. should finish In the Woods, though. ;-}

... of the moment today.....was pleased to find The Likeness by Tana French. This is the follow-up to her debut thriller, In The Woods. Looking forward to reading this.

... let you know that I picked up The Likeness by Tana French today in paperback. It is the follow-up to our earlier read In the Woods. Don't know when I will get around to reading it but when I do I will let you know what I think. I gotta say, I sure do miss our bookclub group and Third Pl ...

Started In the Woods by Tana French. I know i am late on the LT Bandwagon for this title....but.....it's a good 'un.so far.....love the narrator's utter snarkiness and deep sense of the absurd..the malevolent.....yessir!

... avoid catastrophe, and how he's pretty sure it won't, because of political b*******. In short, we're all screwed. #108 In The Woods by Tana French This was for my RL book club, and wow! Am I ever glad that they had chosen this book because I'd never have read it on my own, and that ...

... up some Marianne Moore! My reading this week is almost exactly the same as last week: The French Lieutenants Woman, In The Woods (which I can't read before bed because then I can't sleep), The Emperor's Children, and The Return of Depression Economics (which, again, I can't read ...

I had to put my other books down to finish my RL book club book (In the Woods by Tana French) in time. Not the sort of thing I usually read, but it's fascinating. I can't wait to find out whodunit.

... - perhaps it was too dark for my mood. There was that feeling of an axe about to fall.... Speaking of dark, I'm still In the Woods - where everyone seems to need a little healthy sunshine. Machete, anyone? If any of you like police procedurals and haven't read Tana French, you might ...

... Magician or Ten Years After by Patricia C. Wrede and Caroline Stevermer A Time to be Born by Dawn Powell In the Woods by Tana French Sorry about the erratic touchstones, will edit later. I'm probably not going to make 75, but I would like to get to 70.

... your fingers.... I should finish To the Lighthouse tonight if I can stay awake - Yoga got me today. Then do I go to In the Woods or wait for Wolf Hall? (It's like deciding between chocolate with walnuts or chocolate with hazelnuts. Can't lose.)

... by D.H. Dublin Mystery with a Crime Scene Unit theme. Last (so far) in the series, and I hope he writes more. In the Woods by Tana French I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Set in Ireland, which is not a place I have read much about. Strong characters who are drawn in shades of ...

... cheerleader when "the team" is two yards from the goal line??? The Likeness by Tana French. Go figure. Her first was In the Woods which I enjoyed completely for the writing, the characters and the sense of place she creates. Now, a delightful character returns in Likeness to ...

Believe it or not, but The Likeness is even better than In the Woods. An excellent beginning to your Challenge.

"In the tools shed, under all these tarps----" In the Woods by Tana French "Got a prime suspect?"

"You two would have liked each other." In the Woods by Tana French "Why did you invite him?"

"Now there's a pick-up line." In the Woods by Tana French "What difference does that make?"

First up: In The Woods by Tana French. I've heard good things about this book - so far it's living up to them. I can't get the touchstone to work in the listing post, keeps sending it to A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson. Sigh.

Welcome back - and well done on the 75! Two books in your recent reading that I really liked. That massive hole in In the Woods REALLY upset me (I think "upset" is the right word). And The Gone-Away World is just insane. Personally, I *did* love it, despite its flaws: about 10 pages in, I ...

The Likeness is Tana French's second mystery and involves one of the main characters of the first one. In the Woods was told from the point of view of the male partner of two cops and dealt a lot with the effect of a case on a trauma in his past. This second book is not a sequel of that one. The ...

... for a good, consise review with no spoilers. Very good advice to recommend that readers begin with her first book, In the Woods. This book introduces some of the same characters, so you are getting to know their strengths and foibles, before diving into The Likeness. Did you review ...

... I tried keeping the review pretty simple, so not to reveal too much. If you are interested, start with the 1st one, In The Woods.

... the Group Read- http://www.librarything.com/topic/73347 Please find your copy, we need you aboard!! Belva & Ruth- Yes, Tana French is the real deal! Forget the "crime" stigma and enjoy! Here's an early nugget from The Likeness: "Some people are little Chernobyls, shimmering with silent, ...

Hi, Mark - I read In the Woods also, and I am looking forward to reading The Likeness. She can write so well about the inner life of the characters. I will get the newer one back at the top of my list. Have a good day, and a good week, Mark. Ruthie

... Thanks for pointing out the touchstone error, I wasn't paying attention. Yes, she only has the 2 books but start with In the Woods. Just over 3 weeks for the Group Read! Hope everyone is ready or getting there!

... of the books listed were ones I had read, so I wonder if I've gotten her name confused with someone else .... hmm... but In the Woods sounds interesting and I've added that to my wishlist.

I read In the Woods by Tana French the summer of '08 and was so impressed by this young new voice. She wrote crime fiction, my favorite genre, and it had contained such intelligence and depth. Now I am deeply immersed into her follow-up novel, The Likeness and I have a feeling this will be ...

From ashley21's library I choose In the Woods by Tana French.... I have seen this book pop up a lot on LT!

... called Beat, of which no kind words can be found. Northern Noir moved southish now and then. The best one was In the Woods, which sent me scurrying to add The Likeness to my encores category. My least favorite was Portobello, a good, but not great book by Ruth Rendell.

I would really like a book about Sam, the third detective in In the Woods. He figures more prominently in The Likeness, so it seems a natural progression to have him as the protagonist. Whatever she does next, I will read it.

10> We read In the Woods for my book group. Like you said, some people really can't get over the fact that the one question remains unanswered - although one person in the group was certain she knew whodunnit. LOL. I have The Likeness checked out from the library, so maybe I'll have to ...

The unanswered question at the heart of In the Woods does seem to be the thing that divides those who loved the book from those who didn't. I liked The Likeness even more than In the Woods, in part because it's told from his partner's point of view and gives a new depth to the earlier book. ...

solla, I normally not much of a mystery fan either; however, your description of In the Woods sounds fascinating.

41, 42 That's great to hear. I just read In the Woods on my daughter's recommendation, and just put The Likeness on hold at the library. I heard it involved the same two main characters, and wanted to follow them further. Now, I have even more reason to look forward to it.

... a mystery to me. She doesn't usually read mysteries, but she liked this one and thought I would. In this mystery, In the Woods by Tana French a child who vanished with his two closest friends, then reappeared with blood in his shoes, no friends and no memory of what occurred and not ...

I finished Tana French's The Likeness - it's dark and riveting and thought-provoking. Have any of you read In the Woods? It sounds a tudge too dark for me, and I was wondering what you thought of it.l Then I moved on to Heroic Measures by Jill Ciment - she's quite good with sensitive ...

... makes the unlikely seem possible, kept my attention, and gave me a very enjoyable read. I recommend both this book and In the Woods.

... many! I am feeling kinda out of sort.. I have a good book (The Likeness), but then I had a good one yesterday too (In The Woods)... but I am still kinda grumpy. I hate this feeling!

jhowell... I too loved In The Woods and look forward to beginningThe Likeness today. Sometimes I think reviewers think that if a book isn't a classic, or one that will "improve your mind or spirit" they shouldn't like them. PSHAW! I like what I like. Sometimes I learn, sometimes I just enjoy. ...

#7 - you are in for a treat, mckait -- I loved In the Woods and her second novel The Likeness as well. I just don't get it when I read any of the negative reviews - I thought it was fantastic! - one of the best books I read last year, regardless of genre. I finally, after two solid weeks of ...

still trying to finish In the Woods by Tana French

I'm in the middle of in the woods by tana french. Excellent so far. A little wordy though. I can't wait to finish it!

40. In the Woods, Tana French Tana French won the 2007 Edgar Award for this, her first novel. I cannot deny her achievement—her writing and characterizations are quite good—but the book left me lukewarm. At a hefty 464 pages, it was much too long for a police procedural—the same problem I ...

Finished up In the Woods by Tana French and then read The Adoration of Jenna Fox in a couple of hours. Now I'm about to begin Easter Everywhere by Darcey Steinke. I just can't stay away from those memoirs...

In the Woods by Tana French

I'm partway through In the Woods by Tana French. So far, so really good.

Last night I started The Likeness by Tana French - her follow up to In the Woods. So far, I'm really enjoying it!

It's good to know that there's one author we agree on. I thought The Likeness was a better book than In the Woods, but I'm not sure it would be as good had I not had the background provided in the first book.

From DeltaQueen50's library, I shall pick, In the Woods by Tana French. I don't think I have ever come across an Irish Crime Fiction. Seeing that she gave it 4 stars I think it might be worth a try.

{{{Spoilers ahead--don't read if you want to read In the Woods and be surpised by it all.}}} I liked the way she solved the present day mystery without solving the older one. Sometimes things happen like that--children are so traumatized by something, they never can fully figure it out, ...

I'm one of those who came down firming on the "loved it" side of the In the Woods debate, enjoying the ambiguity of the ending, so I had to read The Likeness as soon as I could. The Likeness by Tana French picks up a few months after the end of In the Woods, but the narrator this ...

I'm reading Tana French's The Likeness and I'm finding it every bit as good, if not better than, In the Woods.

#159 I've just started In the Woods, so I was worried about spoilers and read with only one eye until I got to "loved it", then stopped. I was having second thoughts about, and very nearly took it back to the library unread. I'm not far into it, but so far, so good. Glad to hear you think it's ...

There's been a bit of discussion about Tana French's book, In the Woods, with some people loving it and others not liking it at all. I had it on my shelf, so I thought I'd form my own strong opinion (and the huge issue of the excessive number of books that I own, but have not read, and the ...

After all the strong feelings it's engendered, I just had to pull out my copy of In the Woods and start reading. It's gripping so far and I look forward to forming a strong and contentious opinion on it soon.

Linda, I never read reviews until after I've done my own. Personally, I think you'll like In The Woods, because I think you enjoy offbeat sorts of styles.

Just catching up on things: I've read some of the reviews of In The Woods and was astonished at how many people rated the book poorly because they didn't like the ending. It never dawned on me that that might be an issue. Without saying anything about it, I found that the endings was one of ...

... What happened to Ethel?!? I hope she's okay. When you're feeling rested, you might want to revisit your touchstones for In the Woods. The way they work here is annoying - it brings up the most popular book that has those words. In this case, your touchstone leads to A Walk in the Woods ...

... I'm paying almost no attention to anything except the starred threads. I'm so far behind--barely started my review of In The Woods. However I don't have to worry--it'll be a while before I have to do another.

Joyce - I've got In the Woods and Penman's Henry II trilogy on the wishlist. When in the world am I ever going to get to all these books??

I've posted my review of In The Woods. It's doing a weird date thing... says I posted it in 1969 so it's sorting all the way at the bottom. Here's a link. http://www.librarything.com/work/2573123/reviews/39242506#

finished In The Woods by Tana French category: Authors That Are New To Me C2008 464 pages 3stars sorry this is so brief, I'm getting a little burnt out on reviews but I did want to post something. In a nutshell... underwhelming. Being an Edgar award-winner and having ...

I have In the Woods on my list for my 2nd 999 challenge. I'll be interested to see if you like it.

I'm reading In The Woods by Tana French. I thought I'd be done with it by now but it just seems to go on and on. Next up is Never Let Me Go.

... I enjoyed the book. It was better than I had expected. I am now back in the groove and finishing the second half of In The Woods by Tana French and it is growing in suspense, page by page! I am really finding it hard to put down at this point. I had been right in the middle of reading it ...

Mysteries 1/9 1. One for the Money - Janet Evanovich ****1/2 read 2. Agatha Christie 3. In the Woods - Tana French ****1/2

Joyce, I'll be interested in hearing what you think of In the Woods. I've heard both good and bad, and haven't been able to decide whether it's something I want to try or not. I expect your assessment to clear it up for me!

Thanks for the review of The Likeness. I've been considering reading it since I enjoyed French's first book In the Woods well enough, but the idea of a detective posing as the double for a murder victim seemed far-fetched.

I just recently read In the Woods by Tana French and recommend it highly. I've also gotten but only read one of the Inspector Morse series by Colin Dexter. I read The Silent World of Nicholas Quinn and then Bookmooched the whole series.

If you like psychological mysteries, then I'd sugest In the Woods by Tana French. I thought it was wonderful.

I'm really enjoying In the Woods by Tana French.

6. Finished In the Woods. Loved it! I'm thinking that the detective/crime novel could be one of my favorite genres, if it's done well. French was able to actually make a character out of her detectives - not just stereotypes pulled from TV procedurals. The slow destruction of Rob Ryan, and ...

... it too. It's not a time period I usually like, but I found the language lyrical and the story riveting. I'm reading In the Woods by Tana French. It's very well written and had me hooked from the first page.

Thanks for the suggestions! I read March already for my 999, but I wasn't crazy about it. I will look at Still Life and In the Woods. I'm sure I will adjust these lists several times, but I wanted to at least make a start.

I was just reading Madhatter22's thread and she had a mystery by Tana French (Irish) called In the Woods that sounded great ! There's another for your global reading. I'm putting it on one of my lists.

i literally just finished reading The Woods, and picked up my copy of The Likeness. To be honest i had no idea what the books were going to be about and i was bored at work and picked it up but they are great!!!!

From a most gracious fellow LTer: In the Woods by Tana French from Hachette Books: Fifty is Not a Four-letter Word by Linda Kelsey...for the title alone!!!

... he put himself "above" the horrible characters in the novel...just reporting the philosophies of his kind. Starting In the Woods. I enjoy it and am interested to read another detective novel. My last good one was Sacred Games last year.

Oooh, I just got a copy of In The Woods, I'm looking forward to it! Did you enjoy it? Welcome to the group!

I am reading In the Woods by Tana French. I am enjoying it, but it is slow going.

10. The Likeness, Tana French (category 3) **** French's first book In the Woods was really captivating, and The Likeness even more so. This time we follow Cassie Maddox (the other half of the friendly partnership we witnessed in the first book) as she tries to solve the murder of her ...

Thanks for posting the review! You've certainly intrigued me with In the Woods. I'm no expert in the genre either, but the past year I've been taking more notice of mystery and crime novels and have taken more interest in them than I would have in the past. (partly because of LT, partly because ...

Hi, wanton_librarian! In the Woods looks great! I haven't read a mystery in a while, but I will check this one out. Have a great day! --BJ

#163 I agree with your assessment of In the Woods. The next book by Tana French is The Likeness and it's on my wish list.

I agree with you, Rachael (and your spoiler), about In the Woods. Like you, I also found there was a lull in the middle of the book. That being said, I will probably look for other books by French because I thought that overall it was a good read. Glad you liked the Ally Carter book. When I ...

I've just started In the Woods by Tana French, which has made its way into reading now in what seems to be the habitual manner now: I put it on my wishlist when it came out (so a couple of years ago now, I think); I forget about it; I see a couple of people have read it on LT; I pick up a copy ...

My January favorites were: The Witches by Roald Dahl In the Woods by Tana French

Thanks for your thoughts on In the Woods; I think it goes from the woods to the reading pile!

5. In the Woods, Tana French (category 3) *** Every once in a while I'll find a book that is so absorbing, I don't want to pick up anything else for a while because it can't compete. (This happened after the 7th Harry Potter, I didn't read anything for a month afterwards!) In the Woods was one ...

I just finished In the Woods by Tana French and it really was an excellent book (except for the fact that she doesn't know the difference between a psychopath and a sociopath). I went to the bookstore tonight to see if I could pick up her next book, The Likeness, but they didn't have it, ...

... ies. But what is fantastic so far is The Likeness by Tana French -- I am just loving this author's mysteries! Her first In the Woods was one of my favorites this year. I hope she keeps them coming.

The Likeness by Tana French, a sort of follow up to In the Woods. Decent so far. Predictable, but I think that's the author lulling me into a complacent state before she pulls the rug out from under me.

... enjoying it too. After that, I'll probably read an ARC, maybe The Grift, but based on jhowell's post #20, I'm thinking of In the Woods instead. I'm starting a book that I'll probably pick up and put down a million times and that will probably take a couple of years (at least) to finish. It's ...

Just back from vacation - read alot of books, mostly mysteries - just now finished In the Woods by Tana French. Wow - why didn't anyone here tell me it was so good? I am about to start Kristin Lavransdatter for the group read. Dang #9 - halfway through! I feel like a slacker.

#227 blackdogbooks: Overall, for a first effort (?) I thought In the Woods was OK, but I thought it could have been cut down by 1/3 or so. Tighter editing would have done it some good, IMHO, but then, I am terrible at reviewing books.
