What a sweet picture book! I enjoyed the pictures and storyline quite a bit. I thought, at first, it was fiction, but was thrilled to find out it is a biography! The Spanish seemed a bit stilted, but that's probably due to it being "Spain Spanish" instead of "Mexican Spanish." The pictures complemented the storyline well. It will be a helpful resource for our kids when studying that period of history. I will definitely be promoting this book to my students.

I truly enjoyed this story of Martha Ann and her courageous journey that spans three different continents. I was unfamiliar of Martha Ann's story and reading this encouraged me to find out more information about her. I will use this book in my elementary Spanish Club at school in February for African-American History Month. It will be fun for the students to learn about her and the true story that shows that persistence and hard works pays off.

I received this sweet book from LibraryThing, only problem is that it is in Spanish, and I do not speak Spanish. I had my Grandson try and translate this to me. This is the story of Martha Ann Ricks, who's father saved and purchased her freedom from slavery.
The family moved from Tennessee to Liberia. Having the 14 year old read this to me, and him learning about slavery, made the book even more memorable. He was impressed with her desire to meet Queen Victoria, and presenting the beautiful quilt.
The illustrations are wonderful, and we enjoyed looking at the quilt. Kyra Hicks has down a wonderful job with this story. We both enjoyed it!!

I received a copy of this book from the author, and was not required to give a positive review. ( )

This review is for the Spanish language version of the book. I will be reviewing both the content and the translation.

It's always a joy to read a true story that I've never heard before, and this book fit the bill. We gain a look at the life of a woman who began her life as a slave, and through her own hard work and the kindness of others, achieves her lifelong dream.

There are wonderful lessons here of thrift and frugality, and the value of hard work, but also the joy that can be gained by setting a goal and working toward it. The topic of slavery was handled with a refreshing matter-of-factness, showing the negative sides of it without spending time vilifying anyone, or dwelling on the various horrors.

The book is less a story of the titular quilt, but rather Martha Ann herself. We see her grow into adulthood and old age before finally achieving her dream.

I read the Spanish translation of the book. I am not a native speaker of Spanish, but I had more than sufficiently fluency for this book. I would like to teach my children Spanish, and this book is one that I would like to use. ( )

I love biographies, even of people I have never heard of before I didn't mind that it was in Spanish, as I need keep practicing and this offered some vocabulary I hadn't learned before. It has beautiful illustrations and though sad at times, it has a wonderful ending. I hope many children will pick this up and read it, either in Spanish or English. ( )
