I listened to the CD version of the book, and at first I did not think I would like it, but I stayed with it and it was worth it.

This is the story of 2 women and their different approaches to Christmas. Beth is married to Jacob, she is his 2nd wife and this will be their first Christmas together and she feels dewarfed by the image she has of Jacob's first wife Rebecca, who died 4 years ago. She feels that the shoes she has to fill are large plus her step daughter Holly does not like her. Beth starts her Christmas planning at the beginning of October.

Carol is a magazine editor and a single mother with a 7 year old son. She works long hours and starts her Christmas planning with a quick call to book a cottage (an ad she saw in her own magazine), and the rest of the planning at the last minute. She is panicing because she can't find the gift her son most wants for Christmas and turns up at the cottage to find it is not fit to be let. She wishes then that she had checked into it more.

Beth is the person Carol meets when she picks up the keys for the cottage. Carol decides to press ahead and with the help of Beth and Jacob, Carol and Tim get the cottage livable.

Into the mix comes Holly, Beth's step daughter and Carol's employee. Throw in Carol's new man Nick and some snow and what a good story it was. ( )

Fairly sentimental and lightweight. A good "chick-lit" read. ( )

Its about 2 women who approach the holidays very differently. First lady Beth (stepmom to two grown kids--her step daughter basically hates her and tries to ruin the holiday)Beth lives in a neighbor who that is similiar to the stepford wives.. The villiage she lives in throws a big xmas bash each year and up until 4 years ago it was Beths husbands wife that ran it (the wife died) so beth deals with having to do that as well has arrange xmas for the family at her house.

2nd lady Carol who is a magazine editor for a magazine that is on the verge of shutting down but she gets a huge story that brings the magazine out on top....She is in the midst of this huge story and forgets about the holiday approaching...She is panicked and wracked with guilt for not being better prepared...but she is determined to make this a perfect xmas for her son who got a broken leg just before they left to go away for xmas..... so one of her writers (which turns out to be beths step daughter) wrote and article about this cute little cottage so carol ends up booking this place but its a total dump ....so things come to head when poor beth breaks down cause of the storm the xmas party is a bust but Carol steps in the save the day and thats when she finds out who beths step daughter is.... Even the best laid plans have a habit of unravelling - and no plan at all is a recipe for disaster. When two Christmasses collide, it looks like it's going to be anything but goodwill toward men. Originally published: 2006.
