Loading... Grumpy Birdby Jeremy Tankard
Grumpy Bird decides to walk because he's too grumpy to fly. Funky illustrations and great journey but it would have been more fun if Grumpy Bird didn't easily forget about being grumpy. Great book for toddler to 2nd grade groups. The large clean illustrations go well with small to extremely large groups and invite audience participation when read aloud. Perhaps you know a child who could identify with Bird. One morning he wakes up grumpy and is too miserable to eat, play or fly. Fortunately, he has understanding friends who provide the perfect antidote to his ailment; compassion and fun! Grumpy Bird is boldly illustrated and will appeal to preschool children – even those who occasionally wake up on the wrong side of the nest! Cute book.Excellent illustrations. I got ths book for my sister, who is a Second Grade teacher. She read it to her class . They loved it. I also read it. The story is about a bird who wakes up grumpy. Instead of flying he takes a walk. On his walk he encounters a number of animals and his mood starts to change. "Summary: Feeling too grumpy to fly, Bird begins to walk and finds that his mood changes as other animals join him." This book makes me laugh! I love the style of the illustrations. Grumpy bird goes walking and other animals ask to join him one by one. When he notices them imitating them he makes it into a game and finally cheers up. Kind of silly, but could be fun to try in story time. Illustrations have thick lines, simple but expressive. Bird wakes up grumpy, too grumpy to even fly. He walks along snapping at all the other animals who talk to him, who ignore his grumpiness and follow him anyway -- eventually breaking his gloomy mood. Bird's pinched grumpy face and the surreal animals are perfect. Fun, fun, fun. |

The bold drawings, and simple repetition make this a great book for younger students, but older students and staff have enjoyed it too. It never fails to bring a smile to my face as I read it, and it is wonderful as a read-aloud.
We were lucky enough to host Jeremy for two author visits last year; his presentations were wonderful, and our students were enthralled. Fans of Grumpy Bird will be thrilled to hear there is a sequel available; in Boo Hoo Bird, Bird recovers from a bonk on the head with a little help from his animal friends…
