However, I experienced great prejudice because of the things I read while reading them in public. Everything from Maus I (which i read in middle school) to King (of whom, I was told, reading would cause my sanity to burst). Oh, and never bring a D&D book into your Mormon Stepmother's ... Maus, A Survivor's Tale I: My Father Bleeds History by Art Spiegelman

I've been meaning to read this for years and finally did. The illustrations convey emotions and incidents in ways words-only couldn't have done as effectively. I'm reading part 2 now. Highly, highly ... ... illustrations and the story- not for children! Does anyone have any suggestions for other titles and authors? I have the Maus series by Art Spiegeman ... sums of money for quality. For example, on LT 794 users own Jimmy Corrigan, 791 own Ghost World, over a thousand own Maus, 757 own Blankets, over two thousand total copies of Persepolis and its sequel are owned. Because Yoshihiro Tatsumi is now associated with these "prestige" ... ... to sell here?
One of my pet theories is as follows. Prestigious indie comics have taken off in America (e.g. Maus, Jimmy Corrigan, Eightball) in the past decade, to the point where now Time includes graphic novels in its end-of-year best-of lists, and the New York Tim ... ... (Sorcery and Cecelia): 44

I don't know what the explanation behind the numbers is. Does anyone know? ... I would say more than half of those fall under realistic. I Am The Messenger, Boy Meets Boy, The Glass Castle, Maus and Looking for Alaska are all realistic, even if they were all in different categories themselves of realistic fiction. Hmm so maybe part of the problem is that ... ... Giver by Lois Lowry
April The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls

So I would argue that there is some balance and definitely not all realistic fiction--there is realistic fiction, award ... ... it should be something a bit lighter. In four consecutive months we've had (or will have) The Giver, The Glass Castle, Maus, and Looking for Alaska.
One book that I keep seeing people praise here is The Hollow Kingdom by Clare B. Dunkle, and it has a high rating.
Oh, I loved Blankets too, and I'm not much for graphic novels ususally. (Except for Maus.)
I've just started The Castle Corona, by Sharon Creech. That one's an ARC, too -- I'm evil that way! :D
Do re-read Stargirl d_rolambda. The sequel was quite good, IMO, but it had been a *lon ... I really liked American Born Chinese, and haven't gotten around to reading Maus yet (soon, really!).
I had never read a graphic novel before, and I was really impressed by the quality of the artwork and the story.
***SPOILERS for American Born Chinese***
I didn't have any problem ... >16
Maus, for all it did do, is not the first place where the term 'graphic novel' originated. It was first popularised by being applied to Will Eisner's A Contract With God, though it had been used a couple of times before that.
belleyang, I'd recommend you check out some of Eisner's ... ... it obviously is a combination of the two) genre, which was more or less revolutionized in America by Art Spiegelman's Maus. I believe that may even have been where the term "graphic novel" originated--I seem to remember that a reviewer used it in describing Maus.

I liked Maus, Pedro and Me, The Graphic Adaptation of the 9/11 Report, and Blankets. And in general had been on a graphic novel kick, but these last few I've picked up have ... ... a bit of everthing. my dad's big into comics as well, so i ended up picking up some of them too. i like some serious ones(maus) but mainly go for the funnie, such as bill watersonand jules feiffer. i read a couple of the redwall books when i was younger. i enjoyed them, but i wouldn' ... ... left.
And then I need to start and finish The Glass Castle for this month's discussion in the Read YA Lit group, and Maus for next month's discussion.
But I just went out and bought King John of Canada yesteday, inspired by an article about it in the Star. And while I was there I also ... I've read several excellent WWII-based books over the last year or so:
The Complete Maus by Art Speigelman (graphic novel)
The Secret Purposes by David Baddiel (deeply moving)
Hitler's Canary by Sandi Toksvig (surprisingly good - aimed at young adults/older children)

Okay, my revised voting is:

Persepolis
American Born Chinese
Maus

The two I have are American Born Chinese and Maus. I would also like to add Persepolis. If anyone has any suggestions post them here on or before Tuesday, March 28th. We will then start the voting on Wednesday, ... ... think there's anything wrong with listing graphic novels; I've added a couple of graphic novels to my list already. And Maus is one of the things I plan to read in the next couple of weeks.
I read Life As We Knew It back in January, and enjoyed it a lot; what did you think of it? 16. MAUS by Art Spiegleman, 159 pages.
I hestiate to list this since it's a graphic novel. Due to the story, I think it's okay to list. I'm in the library every week. Right now I have the following books borrowed:
Lisey's Story by Stephen King
MAUS and MAUS II by Art Spiegelman
Arrows of the Queen by Mercedes Lackey
Calculating God by Robert J. Sawyer
Illegal Alien by Robert J. Sawyer
Mindsca ... I read Maus when it first came out, but now that I am trying my hand at my own stuff, I am looking at it from a whole different angle. I notice things like how his lettering changes, or how a few pages uses a lot of hatching, which looks like the "style" in a much later chapter. I think ah-ha! T ... ... two boxed sets (although I have several other books that each have a box instead of a dust jacket). The first I split into Maus I and Maus II, but the other seemed "inseparable" -- Make: The First Year. No real rhyme or reason to my choices. ... like:
Watchmen by Alan Moore
The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller
Understanding Comics by Scott McCloud
Maus by Art Spiegelman
This, of course, if you are looking for graphic novels/comic collections. If you're looking for 32-page single issues, nothing is "classic" yet ... --> 23 and 27
Maus is a definitely a graphic novel.
My daughter and son used to read graphic novels. I started reading them out of curiosity. I was astounded at how excellent some of them were.
Some of my favorite graphic novelists are Will Eisner, Marjane Satrapi, Joe Sacco ... How about Maus? Is that considered a graphic novel?
I have that, and also a "comic book" novel by a favorite artist who wrote the story to illustrate the drawings --- or was it the other way around? :-) ... it was like for my Great-Grandparents and grandfather when they first arrived in this country.
Meantime I recently read Maus by Art Spiegelman, just the first installment, and also made a start on The God Delusion by Richard Dawkins at my mum's house over the weekend but she was in ... ... through the medium of pictures ordered in sequence. Content doesn't matter; it could be anything from Marvels to Maus to The 9/11 Report.
I enjoyed American Born Chinese. I felt like it was a story I'd heard before (hyphenated-American comes to terms with his ethnic identity) ... ... take "the high road" and say that a graphic novel is really just a prose novel told in graphical form (see, for example, Maus or Blankets). Sometimes it can be based on superhero fiction (Kingdom Come or Marvels), and thus it could qualify as a "big fat comic book."
When I read a ... How about a non-fiction graphic novel, like Maus I: My Father Bleeds History or Persepolis?
(edited for touchstones, argh) ... as to go with a graphic novel. The intertwining of the three stories is excellent and it's one of the best examples since Maus of how a graphic novel can also be "real" literature.
I loved, loved, loved Book Thief and was happy it won. It's intense and heartbreaking, but not in an overly ... My parents never censored what I read. When I was eight or nine, my mother had taken out Maus for herself from the library and I, being a very curious kid who loved comic books, began to read it. Instead of taking it away from me, she decided we should all read it together as a family.
One ... ... I've never come across a book by him that I didn't like.
It's a graphic novel, but I love Art Spiegelman's Maus. The Dark Room by Rachel Seiffert is also interesting. It doesn't take place strictly during WWII, but is about it. There are 3 sections - one in the 1930s, one ... ... by simon wiesenthal
I also thought that the Maus books (Spiegelman's use of a comic book format) were powerful.
