However, I was frankly disappointed with the rest of the book - it read like a series of chatty food columns heavily skewed towards meat and heavy dairy. It was published in 1987 and feels a bit dated now. The "Eggplant" essay is highly recommended, though. ( )Colwin reminds me of a friend who makes pronouncements about food and cooking in a similar vein. She (the friend) behaves as if dissent will make for interesting conversation, but in reality she isn't listening to any of your misguided opinions. Same with Colwin. A beautifully written memoir, told through the important foods and meals that marked each event. Especially recommended for aspiring writers. Enjoyed this one very much! Great recipes, very easy to follow! I find myself reading this (and the sequel) about once every 5 years or so because it's like visiting an old friend. She writes about food like I wish I could -- like a long term acquaintance that never disappoints and always provides pleasure. I might read it every five years if it wasn't so painful to remember she died at such an early age. As good as anyone (except maybe MFK Fisher) about food -- and that's saying something. no reviews | add a review
