I have to second (or fifth or whatever) V for Vendetta, From Hell, Maus, Life on Dropsie Avenue, and Ghost World as fantastic stand alones. All are fairly easy to pick up from outside the genre as well.
As a stand alone, I would also suggest Pride of Baghdad by Brian K Vaughan. It's ... ... Write me a comment if you're interested in one of them.
And on the receiving end... I've been looking for a copy of Ghost World for a while with no luck. Anyone have a spare? ... http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=12476
Of the authors mentioned I've read and would recommend:
* Ghost world by Daniel Clowes
* Jar of Fools by Jason Lutes
* Quimby the Mouse by Chris Ware
2007, I picked 150 books to read. However, the last Harry Potter book completely ruined things for me and I had to desire to pick up another book until recently. I got around 50, if I was lucky (see http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=6899).
So, I'm not going to bite off more than I ... ... socks off, but the three I found most interesting were:
The Double by Jose Saramago*
The Invisible Man by H.G. Wells
Ghost World by Daniel Clowes
*touchtones not working for this title I'm also a fan of Ghost World and Neil Gaiman's Sandman.
Sadly, those are actually the only two graphic novels I've read. (And only the first Sandman book at that.) I actually went to the local B&N to pick some up the other day, specifically looking for Palestine which not only did they ... here goes - graphic novels i've really enjoyed so far:
Maus
American Born Chinese
Ghost World
Persepolis
Burying Sandwiches
Grickle
Epileptic
Blankets
Goodbye, Chunky Rice
Jimmy Corrigan
Fun Home
Mother, Come Home
Dogs and Water so here's the good stuff that i've read so far:
Maus
Palestine
Pyongyang
Shenzhen
Exit Wounds
Dogs and Water Ghost World by Daniel Clowes ... to be willing to shell out large sums of money for quality. For example, on LT 794 users own Jimmy Corrigan, 791 own Ghost World, over a thousand own Maus, 757 own Blankets, over two thousand total copies of Persepolis and its sequel are owned. Because Yoshihiro Tatsumi is now ... ... ones done in church basements. we saw modern ones like henderson the rain king, the voice of ariadne, peter grimes, the ghost of versaille, billy budd and the rise of Mahagonny to name a few. At the time I was married to a total opera fanatic, but he loved the verdi-puccini-bellin ... xicanti: I know I'm *way* late on this one. But you disliked Ghost World because it was negative or because you found the writing/art poor? I know I'm in the minority here, but I really wish I hadn't read Ghost World by Daniel Clowes. I found it WAY too negative for my liking.
I also regret reading Hard Love by Ellen Wittlinger. I was very involved with the zine community a little while back, and the book actually made ...
