Aerrin99 in FantasyFans : Recommendations (Dec 2, 2009, 9:33am)

I'd try Robin McKinley (The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, Beauty, Chalice) and Kristin Cashore (Graceling, Fire). Possibly also Megan Whalen Turner (The Thief and sequels). Good luck!

... without talking about the romance between Cassie and Bear. Fans of Beauty and the Beast (especially Robin McKinley’s Beauty) will see strong echoes of that kind of gradual love in Ice. Bear easily won over my heart with just a few lines of dialogue; if you want a nice-guy love interest, ...

I am a fan of The Blue Sword too. However, Beauty is still my favorite book by Robin McKinley. It might be time for a re-read of one or both of them. Maybe when I catch up on the TBR pile or get in a reading funk...

I always like to check out the reviews for books that I've read by other people. I noticed that there is a new review for Beauty by Robin McKinley that should actually be for the book Beastly by Alex Flinn. It was a perfectly good review for Beastly and I wanted to let the member know, ...

... (Alanna: The First Adventure is a good place to start) or Robin McKinley (The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, and Beauty: a retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast are some of my favorites)? You might also look at the Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia C. Wrede (Dealing ...

I needed a little bibliotherapy last night and broke out Beauty by Robin McKinley--one of my favorite comfort reads.

... Madeleine L'Engle Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster The Changeover by Margaret Mahy The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien Beauty by Robin McKinley

I'd intended to read The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay next, but Beauty, (which I loved), has got me craving more beautifully written fantasy. I've decided to dive into Kushiel's Scion by Jacqueline Carey instead.

... overall; not everything blew me out of the water, but there were a couple of very good stories. I figure I'll start Beauty by Robin McKinley next. I feel like I need to read something shorter before I launch int my next chunkster, just so I can feel like I'm actually making some ...

#30: Beauty: A Retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. This was an okay debut novel. The descriptions in the book were lovely, but the storyline left something to be desired. It was a different story than say, Disney's Beauty and the Beast, but it lacked a lot of the magic that ...

... better). Do you own any Robin McKinley? You might look in to getting The Hero and the Crown and The Blue Sword, or Beauty. I'll think about this some more, but those are some favorites of mine that you might like. (Edited because none of my touchstones were showing up.)

jennieg in The Green Dragon : Comfort reads (May 14, 2009, 5:42pm)

Her Beauty and Blue Sword are good comfort reads, too.

Beauty took bare bones and enfleshed them with living, breathing people we cared about-IMO the most "real" telling of it I've ever read. But if you don't care for that type of character-based story, then you don't--tastes simply differ. If you want to try one more before giving up, I'd say Sunshi ...

... I've read by McKinley. I've read The Blue Sword, The Hero and The Crown (I struggled to finish both of them) as well as Beauty. I didn't think Beauty added much to the original tale and struggled to finish it as well. I think what I didn't enjoy was that there seemed to be so little point ...

... will have the same titles as the original stories. The novel-length ones I'm thinking of at the moment are Rose Daughter, Beauty, Zel, Briar Rose, or Rapunzel's Revenge, but there are also The Goose Girl and Tam Lin for a couple that do retain the original titles. I think beyond ...

re: McKinley -- I enjoyed her Spindle's End (Sleeping Beauty) very much, but as I haven't read Beauty I can't compare the two.

... some violence and darkness and sexual themes sometimes... Robin McKinley's books are mostly written for young adults, and Beauty: A Retelling of the Story of Beauty and the Beast is for 9-12 year olds, so it's even younger. Speaking of fairytale retellings, have you ever read Beauty by She ...

... that series, I will read Austenland, which looks very different, but still good! >115, Nikki, I love Robin McKinley. Beauty is probably her simplest fairy tale retelling, and the one that sticks the most to the original story. I loved it when I first read it, when I was 10 or 11, which ...

... your profile and found your name, too. :) I see you've read a few books by Robin McKinley already. Have you ever read Beauty? I've heard that McKinley is a good author for retellings, so I picked Beauty up, but I wasn't over-rapt. It wasn't a bad book, but I just felt she didn't make the ...

... But I want that with more focus on characters and emotions. Some examples that really nailed it for me are Robin McKinley's Beauty and Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine. That said, I'm all for modernizations and trying things out in different settings and times if it works!

I second the recommendation for Robin McKinley -- Beauty is my favorite of hers, but she has many other good ones, as well. The Thief, Queen of Attolia, and King of Attolia by Megan Whalen Turner are excellent, too. A lot of my favorites have already been mentioned here, but if I ...

I love Beauty - Robin McKinley and reread that one a lot.

I said I would post my thoughts about Beauty the day I finished it but it looks like life got in the way. I really enjoyed the story, it's beautifully written and some twists were welcome (I love the one that had to do with the books, it's so inventive). However, I didn't find it completely ...

I've started Beauty by Robin McKinley this morning, and will probably finish it tomorrow as it's engrossing and doesn't have that many pages. Will join the author discussion as soon as I'm done, although I'm too afraid of spoilers for her other books (this is my first book by her).

... The Fortnight in September recently (have nothing to say, which ironically says a lot about how I feel) and I've started Beauty by Robin McKinley this morning, and will probably finish it tomorrow as it's engrossing and doesn't have that many pages.

... I couldn't find any of her other books in stock on the Japanese Amazon site so now I'm patiently waiting on my copy of Beauty to be imported.

... and I think you could draw parallels between, say, someone like Bella who's trying to survive in Edward's world and Beauty trying to make her way in the world of the Beast.

katrina You've convinced me. I will have to get Beauty: A retelling of Beauty and the Beast by Robin McKinley. That was one of my favorite fairy tales when I was a child and I really enjoyed the Disney version (remember the library!) with my children when they were young.

Glad you enjoyed it, katrinasreads! Beauty is my favorite McKinley novel. I think it's interesting to note that it's her first novel, written when she was in her early 20s. Perhaps that's why Beauty rings so true as a character. I discovered Beauty at the school library when I was in seventh ...

My copy of Beauty turned up yesterday! Will we be discussing the books in this thread or another one?

... I am ecstatic to see the selection, as McKinley has long been one of my favorites. I grew up on her Damar books and read Beauty in junior high. I hadn't realized she'd published two new books since Sunshine! I'm halfway through Dragonhaven right now and have Chalice on my bookshelf ...

This will be my first time joining in. I'm going to read Sunshine and Beauty as I have heard a lot of good things about both of them.

... Jones or Patricia C. Wrede. My son, age 11, loves the Percy Jackson series. And Robin McKinley is still great - I love Beauty!

I juat finished Chalice, as well! I enjoyed it -- while it's not up there with my McKinley favorites (Beauty, The Hero and the Crown, The Blue Sword, The Outlaws of Sherwood), I felt that it was much stronger than her last two (though fans of Sunshine might want to dispute that!) and a ...

Oh, I love Robin McKinley, too! Beauty is still one of my favorites.

... and liked it (at least, better than Dragonhaven, which was the release before this one). It's not up there with Beauty and other of my absolute McKinley favorites, but it's one I'll read again.

#88 -- So glad you loved it! Beauty is quite possibly my favorite book. Have you read The Hero and the Crown or The Blue Sword yet? Those are by the same author, and I highly recommend them, as well. Right now I'm reading Into the Woods by Lyn Gardner. It's pretty good, but not great. ...

I finished Beauty today and I loved it!

I've restarted Beauty because I had forgotten about it. I have been caught up in other books lately.

... Ella Enchanted, and Robin McKinley's work. I'm especially fond of Beauty and the Beast stories and loved McKinley's Beauty. And of course, I love fractured fairy tales like The Unhandsome Prince by John Moore and The Enchanted Forest Chronicles by Patricia Wrede.

I did like Spindle's End better than Beauty. Even though it was a re-telling, it was a much more original re-telling (hopefully that makes sense). There was only a very passing resemblance at all to the original story. If anyone is interested I did full reviews of all three books under the ...

... I haven't read any of Dickinson yet... but I'll be starting Tears of the Salamander soon. I am in the middle of reading Beauty by his wife though.

... were decent, although The Hero and the Crown is by far my favorite McKinley yet. Generally I didn't really care for Beauty: A retelling of the story of Beauty and the Beast and would say I enjoy her original tales more as opposed to her fairy tale retellings.

... I was awake enough to appreciate it. The pre-release reviews I read said that it hearkens back to her older books like Beauty and Hero. I hope they're right, I was sorely disappointed by Dragonhaven. 37 clam It was great. We went saw Hellboy II (I know, great date movie, right? :D ) ...

... I got into fairy tale retellings, which are almost all stand-alone and can work as read-alouds. The first one I read was Beauty by Robin McKinley.

If your choice is between Beauty: a retelling of the story of Beauty and The Beast or Rose Daughter, read Beauty. Maybe it's girlish of me, but I loved the dress descriptions, and Greatheart. I also really wanted the Beast's library! Between The Blue Sword and The Hero and the Crown... I ...

I loved The Looking Glass Wars. I would also recommend it. I'm reading Golem's Eye and Beauty. But unfortunately, school is starting school so I'm doing my best to finish all my summer projects and still reading. Most of my reading is late at night though, so I can't read for very long. ...

Like wisewoman, I much prefer Beauty. As much as I love Robin Mckinley's books (she is one of my favorite authors), Rose Daughter has always felt like it has too many unrelated ideas thrown together and they just don't all fit. The writing is beautiful, but the story never made much sense ...

Beauty was first and a wonderful story, one I've loved for years. The best version of this story I'd ever read. Then Rose Daughter was written, by a more mature McKinley who is now questioning some of the fairy tale tropes--and I love it too. By all means, read them both.
