Susan Cooper is another good one, e.g. The Dark is Rising series, as is Diana Wynne Jones, e.g. the Chrestomanci series. You might enjoy Neil Gaiman's Stardust and The Princess Bride, too.

Oh, I'm glad to hear that The Pinhoe Egg is better! I had sort of been avoiding it after Conrad's Fate, out of fear that it would ruin the earlier Chrestomanci books for me. I've never actually read Fire and Hemlock, despite loving DWJ. I think a lot of her books weren't readily available ...

... revivified me, Zoe. The Pinhoe Egg was a great come-back in the Chrestomanci universe after the somewhat disappointing Conrad's Fate and House of Many Ways was a great follow-up in the Howl universe. Still not a traditional sequel, but we do get a few more satisfying glimpses of Howl and S ...

Pretty much everything written by Diana Wynne Jones ever, but especially The Chrestomanci series is wonderful. If you like fairy tale types of stories try Patricia Killip. Terry Pratchett's Discworld books are awesomely hilarious satires of everything under the sun. The Westing ...

Ooooh, you're very lucky then, Busifer! I'm glad to hear you'll get the book so soon! Cmbohn, Conrad's Fate is a lovely thing, isn't it? It's not my favourite DWJ book (that honour goes either to The Lives of Christopher Chant or Howl's Moving Castle), but very enjoyable all the ...

My now 19 year old son and I both have enjoyed the Chrestomanci books the most; he's read more of the others. I haven't read the book, but as a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and others), I was a little disappointed by ...

I'd like to know that as well! The last of hers that I read (Conrad's Fate) was very disappointing, but I too loved her books when growing up, and have even re-read two or three in more recent years. I thought Fire and Hemlock was excellent.

Diana Wynne Jones's Chrestomanci series is a standing favorite for both my sister and me. And Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders and the Harper Hall trilogy are frequent re-reads. It's not a series (yet), but Derek Landy's Skulduggery Pleasant was a trip.

... about chronological order for the Chrestomanci books, I think there should be one exception to the chronological ordering: Conrad's Fate should be read after Witch Week, because it was written so much later and is so much worse.

Chrestomanci: The Lives of Christopher Chant, Conrad's Fate, Charmed Life, The Magicians of Caprona, Witch Week, The Pinhoe Egg is the series chronological order. (Real world publishing order is different; if you read Charmed Life first you'll experience a strange time-shift later in ...
