I think the librarians hate me right now. I've ... Susan Cooper is another good one, e.g. The Dark is Rising series, as is Diana Wynne Jones, e.g. the Chrestomanci series. You might enjoy Neil Gaiman's Stardust and The Princess Bride, too. Oh, I'm glad to hear that The Pinhoe Egg is better! I had sort of been avoiding it after Conrad's Fate, out of fear that it would ruin the earlier Chrestomanci books for me.
I've never actually read Fire and Hemlock, despite loving DWJ. I think a lot of her books weren't readily available ... ... revivified me, Zoe. The Pinhoe Egg was a great come-back in the Chrestomanci universe after the somewhat disappointing Conrad's Fate and House of Many Ways was a great follow-up in the Howl universe. Still not a traditional sequel, but we do get a few more satisfying glimpses of Howl and S ... ... She was one of my favourite authors as a child, but recent attempts to read her books had left me a bit disappointed. Conrad's Fate, The Game, and even the popular Howl's Moving Castle left me feeling that something was somehow missing, and even a reread of my old favourite The Lives ... ... McKillip

There are cats in several of the Chrestomanci books and although they don't actually talk, they may as well. The ones I specifically remember cats in are Charmed Life and The Lives of Christopher Chant. ... Ooooh, you're very lucky then, Busifer! I'm glad to hear you'll get the book so soon!
Cmbohn, Conrad's Fate is a lovely thing, isn't it? It's not my favourite DWJ book (that honour goes either to The Lives of Christopher Chant or Howl's Moving Castle), but very enjoyable all the ... I liked Faerie Path and I loved Conrad's Fate. I just started listening to The Wee Free Men. I'm loving it. ... (I checked both the US and the UK branches as they don't always match. In this case they do.)
I've finished both Conrad's Fate and The Sailor on the Seas of Fate today. Accomplished day if you ask me! Hope to read a third today too. ... away from my books (on another continent) and can't remember which might make a good read-aloud. The last DWJ I read was Conrad's Fate which I thought was terrific, but are there better ones to start them on?
BTW, for the discussion in general--when I first read J.K. Rowling I remember ... My now 19 year old son and I both have enjoyed the Chrestomanci books the most; he's read more of the others.
I haven't read the book, but as a big fan of Hayao Miyazaki (My Neighbor Totoro, Spirited Away, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind and others), I was a little disappointed by ... ... most recent Chrestomanci, and has a lot more of him in it than some of the other recent books. The Pinhoe Egg was sort of the first Chrestomanci book I read, actually. I read Conrad's Fate first, a few years back, but I didn't realize it was related to any other books, and didn't know it had anything to do with the Chrestomanci I had since read ... ... books with sarcastic humor), pretty much anything by Diana Wynne Jones (particularly The Dalemark Quartet and the Chrestomanci books) if you don't mind the fact that you're getting them from the YA section, Death of the Necromancer, and maybe some of Tanya Huff's stuff, depending ... Perhaps Conrad's Fate? I haven't read Conrad's Fate

A Chrestomanci book. Really, I couldn't put it down! I went to the bookstore this morning for some other things, had a bagel while I was there and needed something to read, so I picked this up. I read probably a quarter of it at the store, ... Sure you can - almost everyone's done it, since Conrad's Fate came out so much later. ... about chronological order for the Chrestomanci books, I think there should be one exception to the chronological ordering: Conrad's Fate should be read after Witch Week, because it was written so much later and is so much worse. Chrestomanci: The Lives of Christopher Chant, Conrad's Fate, Charmed Life, The Magicians of Caprona, Witch Week, The Pinhoe Egg is the series chronological order. (Real world publishing order is different; if you read Charmed Life first you'll experience a strange time-shift later in ... ... they aren't so closely related that you can't read them out of order) ... She has continued on in recent years with Conrad's Fate and The Pinhoe Egg in the Chrestomanci series. I haven't gotten around to The Pinhoe Egg yet, but Conrad's Fate was OK, if maybe not up to her first ... ... boy lead of the latter is an adult in the former, with children of the same age). Then, nearly 30 years later, DWJ gave us Conrad's Fate (Christopher as a teen) and The Pinhoe Egg (Christopher as an adult, clearly follows Charmed Life). So, ignoring other, 'passing appearance', titles for a ... ... (medal and honor books) has been favoring books for older readers in the past years.
smfmpls, I am a huge DWJ fan and Conrad's Fate is not among my favorites. Thanks for the recommendations, dl. I'm a sucker for fantasy novels involving cats, like Fudoki.
I just read Conrad's Fate by Diana Wynne Jones which features a teenaged Christopher Chant as a character. It was interesting and inventive as usual, but too long and loosely edited.
