I love these series! Every book has something different to like. This one has Magic, Vampires, Demons, Knights and the lost shroud of Christ. Thank god i still have a lot of books to read!! ( )

Re-read Nov 2016, originally read Feb 2011. Might have liked it better the second time, if only because the series has clearly found its footing by this book. ( )

Another in the installment of "How much can we beat the crap out of Harry Dresden". I think each of these books requires him to be close to death at least 5 times. All the supporting cast makes an appearance, and the introduction to a new character, Butters, that seems like he will be recurring person in future books. Or it could be that Butcher is just getting better at making characters. Everyone in the books seems to be getting more flushed out in terms of personality, and I think that has to do with Butcher becoming a better writter. I guess everyone who told me to stick with the series was right.

As for the plot... It had a reasonable McGuffin, although if the real Shroud of Turin was stolen I think that might have been a much bigger deal the world over, but the book is pretty isolated in Chicago so who knows. The new uber bad guy was both believable and mythical and the minions made total sense in terms of the books mythology.

The Shroud of Turin is missing and Harry must recover it before a group of fallen angels, called Denarians, find it. He is aided by the Knights of the Cross, led by his close friend Michael. Not only that, but Harry is challenged by a high ranking Red Court vampire to a duel. Susan temporarily returns to Dresden's life, and we get to see a small glimpse of Marcone's deepy buried past. A solid book from start to finish. ( )

Book description
Harry Dresden, Chicago's only practicing professional wizard, should be happy that business is pretty good for a change. But now he's getting more than he bargained for.
  • A duel with the Red Court of Vampires' champion, who must kill Harry to end the war between vampires and wizards
  • Professional hit men using Harry for target practice
  • The missing Shroud of Turin
  • A handless and headless corpse the Chicago police need identified

Not to mention the return of Harry's ex-girlfriend Susan, who's still struggling with her semivampiric nature. And who seems ot ahve a new man in her life.
Some days, it just doesn't pay to get out of bed. No matter how much you're charging.
