All good reviews .... you HAVE been busy. ;-) I've had to add Fire and Hemlock to my wishlist. It was just too tempting not to. I love Victorian mysteries, but somehow Mr Wicher does not quite resonate for me.

#121 Rachel, if you need a fix and still can't find either, you can always borrow mine... Fire and Hemlock is even in a relatively good state as I only bought my own copy (instead of nicking my sister's) fairly recently (Time of the Ghost on the other hand...)

Fire and Hemlock is one of my favorite books of all time, Stasia. I'm so glad you liked it!

I have Fire and Hemlock down for a reread as I hardly remember it now. When I discovered Diana Wynne Jones a few years ago, I was an instant fan and read everything of hers I could lay my hands on and was never disappointed. I'm pretty sure that first book was The Magicians of Caprona. starsme ...

Fire and Hemlock and The Perilous Gard--- two of my favorite books of all time!!!

#93 Fire and Hemlock sounds interesting, definately going to see if my library has it! :)

Sigh! Okay, my copy of Fire and Hemlock comes down for a re-read. I agree it is one of her best, even though my favorite is Dark Lord of Derkholm for its very serious although side-splitting examination of the logical consequences of fantasy tropes. I also have to reread House of Many Ways as ...

I always planned to read Fire and Hemlock yet didn't really have a chance yet..seems like you enjoyed it quite a lot.. I'll try reading it this summer (after I'm done with Vanity Fair)

Oh, cripes, now I want to re-read Fire and Hemlock.... it's such a great book. Polly is such a fantastic heroine (it is Polly, isn't it?? Suddenly feeling rusty...). Fire and Hemlock

I love that one too! I think the only Diana Wynne Jones book I didn't like was Fire and Hemlock. I have started The Warrior Heir. I got about 1/4 of the way into it last time and just put it aside. For some reason, I never picked it back up, so we'll see how it goes this time.

I love Fire and Hemlock! My only complaint with it is that the ending is very abrupt. Dark Lord of Derkholm is possibly my favorite DWJ, and I love Year of the Griffin, too. Her Tough Guide to Fantasyland is a great complement to Dark Lord of Derkholm. The first DWJ I read was Howl's ...

... and I've read most of her books several times. My favorites are probably the Chrestomanci books, Howl's Moving Castle, Fire and Hemlock, Year of the Griffin, and Deep Secret. Her books have held over the years and I still get just as much enjoyment out of them as I did when I was 10.

fire and hemlock is amazing, it's one of those books I've re-read every year since I was about 10. I also love a tale of time city and I've recently discovered deep secret which I found really funny. it's the prequel to the merlin conspiracy.

I have not read Fire and Hemlock, but I have read Fire in the Mist.

Hmmm... She has three or four series and then quite a few stand alone stories. I would recommend starting either with Fire and Hemlock, which is my personal favorite and stands alone, or with the Chestomanci series, which starts with Charmed Life.

Fire and Hemlock is probably my favorite Diane Wynne Jones of all time... although the Chrestomanci books are all reat, especially Witch Week, and I love her Dalemark Quartet. She's a very prolific author, and I know there are books of hers that I still haven't read. I need to get on that!

I have not read Playing with Fire, But I have read Fire and Hemlock.

... yet another Dahl book. The Gremlins..up next! and now, thanks to all for the glowing recommendations regarding Diane Wynne Jones...My fear is that I'll get hooked and will want to read them all and then will be listing nothing but reviews about her books for a long time.

... her more recent stuff in hardback as it's come out, but I would love a first edition of something like Archer's Goon or Fire and Hemlock. I'm fighting the urge to go into a soliloquy about how much I love DWJ's stuff (I've read the lot numerous times, except her very first, Changeover ...

>462 & >465: You have to read some DWJ for sure. My personal favourites are still the standalone Fire and Hemlock and The Time of the Ghost, but I love the Chrestomanci books, especially The Magicians of Caprona - a very, very funny re-telling of the feuding-families-brought-together trope. I ...
