... of the Ring took the title. But I still have to do three other reviews before I get to that so off I go!! 147. The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds I borrowed this from my Uni library on pure whim and luckily it's by the same author that wrote the book I was originally going to use for ...

... another book for this challenge which was certainly unexpected. Instead of reading Absolution Gap for my "R" read I read The Prefect which is by the same author but it is a prequel to the series of which Absolution gap is the third book. For all it was a rather hard sci-fi book I managed to ...

I think out of sheer boredom today I grabbed The Prefect out of my uni library and started reading for no logical reason that I can think of since it's been ages since I read anything *this* hardcore sci-fi but maybe since I keep meaning to go back to the Revelation space books perhaps reading ...

Weirdly I picked up The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds while I was bored in between classes this morning from the Uni library - I do have my own copy at home but since I'm not gonna be there for another 2 weeks or so yet I thought why not read some uber hard-core science-fiction? Whether I'll ...

... part of the book. I've actually read the Yiddish policeman's union so thats one sci-fi I forgot about! must say the Prefect sounds great - going onto my wish list

... day... Good sf novels published since 1999: The Yiddish Policemen's Union, Michael Chabon Matter, Iain M Banks The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds Life, Gwyneth Jones (stupid touchstone doesn't work) The Night Sessions, Ken MacLeod Black Man, Richard Morgan The Caryatids, Bruce ...

... My Sister's Keeper, Jodi Piccoult Q- The Ivy Chronicles by Karen Quinn R- The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds S- The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society, Mary Ann Shaffer T- The Fellowship of the Ring, J.R. ...

... The Execution Channel and The Night Sessions might appeal - although they're more thriller-ish than Century Rain or The Prefect. But for "pure" sf, you probably can't do better than The New Space Opera and The New Space Opera 2, which are indicators of the state of the genre.

... into SF, either near future or far which might lead you from your current reading back into the latest SF offerings. the prefect might be worth considering, or century rain both part mystery. Technically excallant (AR is a physicist so tends not to make major science errors) and ...

... and I hope for more of them, and that Anita who has become hard, cold, self-absorbed, and nasty dies horribly. The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds, Hard SF, Mystery, Space Opera 7th book in the Revelation Space series. Story is about the Prefect, local law enforcement for ...

... good Warhammer 40K novel, but I want to expand my horizons. I feel drawn towards the thickness of Peter Hamilton and Alastair Reynolds novels. Should I be worried? Should I consult a physician? ;)

... Dorsai by Gordon R. Dickson 3. Lost Dorsai by Gordon R. Dickson 4. The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds 5. White Maze by Junichi Fujisaku 6. Consider Phlebas by Iain M. Banks 7. ...

... of British sf writers. Redemption Ark is not even one of his best ones. I'd say Absolution Gap, Chasm City and The Prefect were all better. His short fiction is pretty damn good too.

#11 If those copies are the ones in your catalogue then some of them aren't true firsts. The Dreaming Void and The Prefect were both published in 2007 in the UK; your copies are catalogued as published in 2008 (with the US covers).

... Songs on Bronze: The Greek Myths Made Real by Nigel Spivey House of Suns (Gollancz) by Alastair Reynolds The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds The Shadows: Vampire Huntress Legends by L. A. Banks Last Watch (Night Watch) by Sergei Lukyanenko ...

... speculating on the next 997,992 years. Some made my head explode. Some made me kinda queasy. Not for everyone. 3. The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds. Good solid science fiction.

... Williams 1610: A sundial in a grave Gentle A Sourcerer's Treason and Camelot's Honour by Zettel Galactic North, The Prefect and House of Suns by Alastair Reynolds. 6 of them are full sized hardbacks and 2 more are paperback as big as a full sized hardback and I really, really ...

Currently reading The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds - I LOVE me some space opera, even tho I'm not sure what that term really means. This is my third of the five Revelation Space novels. Also just finished two free Cory Doctorow e-books; Little Brother, which I loved despite the ...

... of Heaven,Jon Krakauer. Insights on the first truly American-born religion that lasted more than a generation. The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds. What's life without a little science fiction running in the background? Good stuff so far. Starting: Books: A Memoir, Larry McMur ...

We haven't even gotten The Prefect in the US yet. It gets here in June I think. With the exchange rate and shipping costs I figure it would cost me about $217.00 US (slight exaggeration) so I decided to wait. I have seen three new release books this week with the exact same price in US and Canadia ...

#80 wow i didnt know that was out. I've only just got my hands on The Prefect which is what I'm reading now. Is House of Suns more in the revelation space universe or a different one?

Onto The Prefect set in his revalation space universe, sometime before(ish) his other works. Intriging so far.

... I wandered into my favourite bookshop - I escaped again, but only just. Bad luck and trouble Voice of the gods the prefect maneater the good husband of zebra drive Empress of mijak all on 3 for two and The Omnivore's Dilemma: and City cycling by Ballentine which it ...

... as it's a novella. But it pretty much a distillation of all the themes which appear in all his novels and short fiction. The Prefect, Alastair Reynolds - a welcome return to form after the disappointing Century Rain. Normally, Reynolds' villains are more interesting than his heroes, but ...

... Diary which is horrible. And YES, Glasshouse (the best Stross ever, the best novel this decade) is much better than The Prefect, but Glasshouse was last year's nominee. >#6 I'm not much of a Greg Egan fan, but Dark Integers was fabulous! Definitely gets my vote. >#7 More ...

... I don't know if I will push Halting State. I really loved Glasshouse. I can't imagine something better than that. The Prefect might not make it either, but it's better than most everything else I have read this year. I'll take Scott Lynch over Paul McAuley any day of the ...

... make it - which I see from another post you have on your to read list. I would agree with In War Times but relegate The Prefect into a group of maybes along with Cowboy Angels by Paul McAuley and The Execution Channel by Ken MacLeod. I'm not a big fan of Scott Lynch so ...

... be nominated for the 2008 Hugos? I have three novels on my list so far: In War Times by Kathleen Ann Goonan, The Prefect by Alastair Reynolds, and A Betrayal in Winter by Daniel Abraham, though I have high hopes for Scott Lynch's Red Seas under Red Skies. Are ...

#14 Century Rain is a good standalone. Chasm City and The Prefect are books in a universe which has a longer series of works. Galactic North is a collection of short stories set in that same universe.

... from my all time favourite author C J Cherryh then probably all the rest of her back-catalog that I'm missing. then Prefect, Galactic North because Alistair reynolds is pretty close to being all time favourite. After that it would be a bit of tour around - quite a bit of non-fict ...

... general theme - alien war in the galaxy, though its not apparent at the start! I'm waiting for Galactic North: and the prefect to come out in paperback, could be a long wait, they've only just come out in hardback - If they go through a trade paperback size I'll be really really annoyed. ...
