Red unicorn was the necessary answer to Gold Unicorn: Gold Unicorn left Tanaquil unfinished. She didn't have what she wanted and was miserable and without goals because of it. During Red Unicorn, Tanaquil has another Unicorn and a whole new world, but it ties everything together- every world answers a need she has- this one resolved her need for love, helped her relate to her mother, and helped her figure herself out.
