Alyssa Day has certainly caught my attention with an empathic Riley Dawson and a hot group of Poseidonās warriors that are on a treasure hunt, of sorts. I know Iām all tingly and ready to go. lol Her grief called to him. It would not be denied. He must got to her. The mental telepathic dialogue had me cracking up, so I put a smile on my face and prepared myself for a fun, sexy read. I mean, sheās an empath and heās a high prince, the first of Poseidonās warriors, so what could possibly go wrong. āYouāre not going to drink my blood or rip my arms off, are you? Because my day has really sucked, and Iām so not up for that,ā she saidā¦ Barrabas, a powerful vampire, felt the disturbance caused by their meeting. Oh man, so cool. Water warriors and blood sucking Vampires. What more could I want? I am hooked and happy. Everything Conlan does is for Atlantis, so denying his overwhelming desire for Riley, who is not only a forbidden human, but also an empath, literally brought him to his knees. Conlan and his warriors were tasked with protecting the humans from shapeshifters and vampires, and were clearly from the Land of Hunk. I am feeling upbeat, having fun, sharing Conlan and Rileyās internal dialogue and lovin ā every minute of it. And now we find out why they are above groundā¦Poseidonās Trident has been stolen. Conlan could lose his kingdom if they donāt recover it. āYouāre not a vampire, because youāve got a heartbeat,ā she said. āAre you a shapeshifter? What kind of furry are you going to get?ā He laughed. āIām not going to turn furry, brave one. I am nothing you know.ā Conlan knows that empaths donāt exist, yet hereās Riley. He also knows that the soul meld doesnāt exist, yet how to explain the sparks between them. Well, Alyssa, you drew me in, kept me riveted to the pages, worrying and fretting, laughing and smiling, never letting me go. The action kept the story flowing as I devoured the words. The world created was full of wonder and I am so happy to have been able to visit Atlantis and meet all these fabulous characters that escaped from the mind of Alyssa Day. This is the first book I read by this author and while the plot was good, in my honest opinion, the book itself was not :(
The switch in POV was nice and pretty unique, but it got a bit too much, especially when you got to the steamy scenes. It just made it overly long and weird, and I must admit I skipped much of those scenes (canāt believe Iām saying this!).
I know as this is a first in the series, the author would want to paint a picture of their world, slowly introduce everyone, ā¦ But the character development was just about decent. There wasn't any depth to the characters. I would have thought Riley would have needed a longer time to adjust and come to terms with what was happening, but well, she leaped pretty much straight into the unknown :)
Conlan was also pretty blasƩ about what their relationship would mean to the Atlanteans and while you know what happened in his recent past, we don't really know anything about him (or anyone else for that matter).
I think of all the characters in this book, I like Alaric and Ven the most :D One is dark, broody and powerful as hell and the other is a killing machine with a fun and playful side.
Pacing and flow were good, though as earlier stated, the switching of POV was detrimental to the overall flow and feel of the story.
The book itself was well written with only a small error here and there, nothing that bothered me while reading. And yes, there is sex described in this book (if that is important to you).
All in all, Iām pretty sad it didn't turn out as good as I had hoped it would be, so Iām not sure if Iāll continue the series or not. ( )
