Set in Sweden this is the story of how crook John tries to use Vicky in a con only to have it completely backfire on him.
Peter's dialogue is brilliant and so believable, as is her storytelling. It's a shame there are only six books in the series. ( )

I can't help it. Against all odds I actually enjoy these books about Vicky Bliss. Light-hearted, undemanding reading about an art historian who gets into dangerous circumstances due to her connection to a 'gentleman thief'.

When Vicky is tricked into helping her raffles-type 'boyfriend' to rob a Swedish recluse of his archealogical treasures all three of them are held captive on a remote island and forced to co-operate with a gang of unscrupulous relic thieves who have every intention of disposing of them the minute the 'treasure' is found. As usual, the two heroes in the shape of Vicky and John (Raffles) save the day but is John killed at the end or not? I think he will return.

Light entertainment at its best. ( )

The third Vicky Bliss story, this novel sends Vicky to Sweden to find out what John is up to now. When she gets a call from "Cousin Gus", she knows that she must keep this man from being swindled. What she ends up in is a web of intrigue that John was unaware of.

This novel continues the developing relationship between Vicky and John, a criminal with a heart of gold. Vicky is, as always, independent and resourceful. The book is a fun read! ( )

Quotations
I object to murder. It's just a silly girlish prejudice.
His tools were the simplest imaginable--a pair of sharp scissors and a sheet of black paper. I gave him a profile, and watched out of the corner of my eye. After one long, measuring survey, he began to cut, the paper turning smoothly in his hands as he clipped, without a pause or a second look at me. It was an astonishing performance, a demonstration of the art in its most difficult and refined form of freehand cutting.

Book description

Amazon.com Book Description (ISBN 0380733374, Mass Market Paperback)

One perfect red rose, a one-way ticket to Stockholm, and a cryptic "message" consisting of two Latin words intrigue art historian Vicky Bliss -- as they were precisely intended to do. Beautiful, brilliant and, as always, dangerously inquisitive, Vicky recognizes the handiwork of her former lover, the daring jewel thief John Smythe. So she takes the bait, eagerly following Smythe's lead in the hope of finding a lost treasure. But the trail begins at a priceless fifth century chalice which will place Vicky at the mercy of a gang of ruthless criminals who have their eyes on an even more valuable prize. And the hunt threatens to turn deadly on a remote island, where a captive Vicky Bliss must lead an excavation into the distant past -- and where digging too deep for the truth could dig her own grave.
