This book is about a little girl named Lore who is born just as WWII starts and Nazi Germany is in control. Out of fear for their daughter, Lore's parents give her to a Christian family to keep her safe. During that time she is shuffled around and hidden trying to keep away from the Nazi's. She forms a close bond with the families 20 year old daughter. After two years her parents come back to get her, only now, Lore does not want to go with them. It takes time for her to trust her parents again and she lived a long and happy life.
This is a great book. The illustrations were awesome with great detail to convey the emotions that the characters were feeling. This book recounts the true life story of Lore Baer during the Nazi's rein. My class really enjoyed the book. It sparked great discussions and debates among the children.
At the start of the lesson I would place a yellow star on the sleeve of my jacket. I would explain to the children that if I were living in the time of Lore Baer and was Jewish that I would have to place a yellow star on all of my clothes before being seen in public. On a sheet of paper, in a giant star, I would have the children write down adjectives that describe tha characters as I read the book aloud. After the completion of the story we would make a master list of adjectives and then work on an acrostic writing. ( )
