I picked up this book because Elmo was on the cover and my son loves Elmo. However it really is about Big Bird and a fire fly that he catches.

This is another Early Readers book with very similar elements; short sentences, repeats common words, simple in plot. One of the other Early Reader books that I reviewed felt disjointed. This one is not at all. It is simple and flows extremely well. Additionally, the illustrations help to convey emotions of the characters that is not indicated by the text (our lightning bug is clearly sad when he's in the jar). I really appreciated that aspect of the book.

There is nothing not to like about this book. It does what it is supposed to do; make reading and telling stories fun.

There is a fantastic message at the heart of this story about respecting all creatures, no matter how small. Overall, a great book. ( )
