This continues Karen's Armstrong's autobiography begun in Through the Narrow Gate. After leaving the convent, Armstrong struggles with a world she barely understands and with more people who, under the guise of helping her, are really not much better off than she is. She continues to triumph over the spiritual abuse that she encounters.

Much of this is retold in The Spiral Staircase, which I didn't make it through. ( )
