Book description
Now that a false king has usurped the throne by dark and magical means, the kindgoms are in chaos. Champions wage war for gain and not for honor. Armies fight for one more foot of bloody land. And while humans destroy each other daily, the creatures of the Shadow gather for the final assault: a frenzy of ghouls, trolls, vampires, and men who are no longer men. 
Only the tree king can stop the slaughter, but he is a prisoner of the Shadow, and he will never be the same again ....

    MOUTH OPEN WIDE,
    IVORY SPIKES SET TO SEIZE HIS THROAT
    THE VAMPIRE LEAPED AT CHONDOS.

Fingers like claws clamped, inhumanly strong, on his arm. Chondos swung his free arm around. the sleeve, loaded with glowing Hastur stones, slapped the pallid face.

The vampire screamed and flung him through the air. As he got to his feet, it rushed him, hissing like a cat.

Chondos had just time to drop a large rock from his sleeve into his hand. AS the creature sprang for his throat, he heaved the stone high and brought it down with both hands. The skull caved in like a wasp's nest; the bony figure fell.

But still it was not dead. On hands and knees, the corpse crawled toward him ....
