41. Little Children by Tom Perrotta 42. Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink

... Pocus (it is the current selection of a decidedly slow reading group I have with one other person). Since finishing Little Children (which I was fairly unsatisfied with, if only for the lack of interesting descriptiveness that the situations might suggest) I've started The End of Alice ...

... thread will somehow catalyze my reading. Right now I am reading: 1. Kurt Vonnegut- Hocus Pocus 2. Tom Perrotta - Little Children

Tom Perrotta's Little Children is based on Flaubert's Madame Bovary. I'm not sure if you consider A Confederacy of Dunces a classic yet, but Andrew Fox's Fat, White Vampire Blues is an homage to it. There's lots of updated Shakespeare - Julie and Romeo for example.

citygirl in The Green Dragon : Acting Porn (Feb 23, 2008, 9:49pm)

dreamlikecheese, I woulda thought Kate Winslet, too. But there is an exception. I read Little Children and was so disgusted with its mediocrity that I've not wanted to see the film. Unless someone can tell me it's worth it. yareader2, I know, sometimes you get great chemistry where you're ...

2007, I picked 150 books to read. However, the last Harry Potter book completely ruined things for me and I had to desire to pick up another book until recently. I got around 50, if I was lucky (see http://www.librarything.com/talktopic.php?topic=6899). So, I'm not going to bite off more than I ...

Little Children - Tom Perotta. A movie was made of this why? I kept waiting for something original to happen, but it was just another suburban domestic drama. No depth. Why read this when you can have Margaret Atwood, John Updike, Richard Ford etc., etc? Until I Find You - Jo ...

>123: citygirl. I agree with you about Little Children. It was just another mediocre novel about infedelity. The movie came across the same way, which doesn't surprise me, given the material. Perrotta has a new novel out, and I have zero interest in picking it up.

Besides two Dexter books I have to finish soon, I just got from the library The Bad Girl, Little Children, and Bait and Switch. I hope to have them done the weekend of Thanksgiving.

I'm starting The Abstinence Teacher by Tom Perrotta as my first selection. I really enjoyed Little Children, so I thought I'd start the 50 Book Challenge with a novel I know I can plow through. Some other books on my list: 2) The Yiddish Policemen's Union by Michael Chabon 3) ...

I read Little Children by Tom Perrotta over the weekend ... excellent book! ... I'm now about 40 pages into Epitaph for a tramp by David Markson ... Markson is best known now for his very post-modern novels like Reader's block and Wittgenstein's mistress, but this is a noir mystery ...

Oscar and Lucinda Little Children The Hours The House of Sand and Fog The Piano

Little Children The Clown Green Grass, Running Water Pretty Birds The Song of Kahunsha

... Hitchens (and was disappointed in his 3 hour BookTV interview). I was in the mood for some fiction so I read Little Children by Tom Perrotta (I can now netflix the movie) and just started The Last Resort by Alison Lurie. I hope to get back to Hitchens tomorrow.

Little Children. I was seriously disappointed. It's a domestic drama, but with very little new to say or any new way to say it. What's the big deal? Updike, Richard Ford, Atwood, they all do this better. And so do loads of others. Why make a movie out of it?

... month. I got these today: * The Cheese Monkeys by Chip Kidd * The Hero's Walk by Anita Rau Badami * Little Children by Tom Perrotta * The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon

Oh! I finally got one. Don't know why I'm having so much trouble. Stuart Little Little Children Children of the Day Days That Changed the World The World is Flat

Quite a few! Little Children by Tom Perrotta The Omnivore's Dilemma by Michael Pollan Assassination Vacation by Sarah Vowell I Know This Much is True by Wally Lamb The History of Love by Nicole Krauss I'm enjoying all of them immensely, and would recommend ...

... see if anyone else liked it at the store I work at. I'm pretty sure that it's not just us. As for Tom Perotta, I read Little Children and definitely thought it was a better movie than the book. Only got half way and thought it was pretty dumb. I'm in SUCH a slump right now. 4 failed ARC' ...

Just for the record, as one who has not seen it, I see no spoiler in the Little Children comment. Thanks for the suggestions. I can't say that the story appeals to me -- I have never gotten a lot out of the "disappointments of suburban life" plot, probably because I have never lived that life, ...

Ordinary People The Grapes of Wrath Little Children (which for some viewers/readers is really irritating. Retrograde conclusion! Everybody goes back to his/her lifeless spouse, and that's supposed to show they've grown more mature. Yuck. Makes for a good discussion, though, and Kate Winslet ...

Stupid is as stupid does. Little Children, Tom Perrotta: "Poor baby."

Currently reading Little Children by Tom Perrotta.

... someone once told me that the first book if his you read will always be your favourite...don't know if that's true?! Little Children was one of my fave books so far this year: hope you enjoy it cafepithecus! Am reading Company by Max Barry at the moment and finding it disappointing: ...

... halfway through Marriage: A History -- very well-researched, but it's kind of putting me to sleep. I'm going to start Little Children tonight -- haven't seen the movie and I wanted to read the book first.

Little Children by Tom Perrotta. Great story so far.

Just finished How to be a Canadian by Will and Ian Ferguson. Picked up Little Children by Tom Perrotta at the airport. Hate being without a book in transit as I've usually read most of what the smaller airport bookstores have. I'm planning to start The Passionate Nomad, the biography of Fre ...

5: Little Children is a great read. I'll probably read Pride of Baghdad next, but I'm not sure.

Either A Girl Becomes A Comma Like That by Lisa Glatt or Little Children by Tom Perrotta.

... was similar to the book- so so. If you really enjoyed the book, you will probably enjoy the movie, in my opinion. I read Little Children and really loved it! I can't wait to see the movie as well! It may have already passed through here, who knows. I'll keep my eye on it for a DVD rental.

... Medwed does the same for Cambridge, most enjoyably in How Elizabeth Barrett Browning Saved My Life. Tom Perotta's Little Children is a good read set in a community that greatly resembles his town of Belmont.
