alphaorder in Book talk : Academic Novel (Nov 23, 2009, 11:07am)

... I was a bookseller to mean books with academic settings. Others used it too. It usually meant higher ed., but things like Prep could also qualify. I appreciate all of the input. The campus + fiction should yield some good findings. I HIGHLY recommend both Crossing to Safety and Stoner ...

38) prep by Curtis Sittenfeld I enjoyed it, but it was a little hard to get into. After about 100 pages, though, things got more interesting in Lee's life.

I have just gotten a copy of American Wife. I'm hoping that it's as good as prep was.

Just got back from the States (Sittenfeld's The man of my dreams, a bit of a disappointment after Prep but not bad). Now I'll return to one of my favourite places in fiction - the harsh prose and fantastic characters of Sara Lidman's "Jernbane-eposet" series. I'm just starting Lifsens rot, ...

... challenge is Mannen i mina drömmar (The man of my dreams) by Curtis Sittenfeld. I really liked Sittenfeld's debut Prep, a very clever take on coming of age and class set in a fancy private high school. This has the same strong sense of identification, but is unfortunately not nearly as ...

52. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I saw this on amazon when I was looking at the reviews for American Wife and then found it at the library. It was a really uncomfortable read because it took me right back to my nerdy, miserable teenage years which I've been trying so hard to forget! I was ...

... **** Wintergirls by Laurie Halse Anderson *** Also of interest to a YA would be: Columbine by Dave Cullen ***** Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld ***** As you can see I thought most of them were pretty good! The lowest rating was Wintergirls and that was more because of the depressing ...

I have both Prep and The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox on the TBR mountain. Looking forward to getting to them soon.

... this year I decided I must read his last memoir and I'm glad I did as I think this one would be my favourite one. 45. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld ***** A coming of age story this is about Lee Fiora who leaves home at 14 from Indiana to attend school at an Eastern prep boarding school on ...

I finished Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. I could not put it down, I really liked it. Next up is The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox by Maggie O'Farrell.

... Teacher Man by Frank McCourt - each of his memoirs have been great reading. May he rest in peace. Today I have started Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld... I seem to have a school theme lately!

... class I'm taking shortly. From the library I got The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian by Sherman Alexie Prep by Curtis Sittenfield Teacher Man by Frank McCourt

I haven't read American Wife, but I thought Curtis Sittenfield's book Prep was excellent. Have you read it?

... little to no knowledge of how things work. Review INITIATION reminds me very much of Curtis Sittenfeld’s Prep: middle-class outsider attends a prestigious high school, witnesses with shock the lawless doings of the rich, and emerges from his/her school years relatively ...

I am currently reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld. So far so good - I really like her style.

17) Normal at Any Cost by Christine Cosgrove 18) Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld.

hell behind *again* on reviews >:( I've three to do methinks so i'll get the first one out of the way now. 40. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld Hmm... this book was rather "blah" overall. Although the observations made about life at a prestigious boarding school by a middle-class outcast on a ...

... read Envy: a Luxe novel on ... Tuesday possibly and I've been reading Last of the Wilds but i put it down while i read Prep which was a random find at the library. I finished it earlier and i have rather mixed feelings about it - it was interesting but i just couldn't see what the overall ...

I was just at Ault boarding school in Massachusetts (cripes i hope i spelt that right) with Lee Fiora in Prep it's a quite intriguing book although it does just seem to be about her time at the boarding school so i'm a little confused as to it's overall point- i'm hoping everything will start to ...

... the various book-selling places in town and eventually picked up one book from the library that looked rather interesting. Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld - i started reading it last night and i'm rather enjoying it so far although its quite hard to describe what the book is *actually* about.

I've decided to join in this challenge a bit late. I joined the 999 challenge and picked out the books I wanted to read before hand. Of course I am now reading a book here and there that isn't a pre-selected book. I could change my 999 lists to accommodate these books easily as most still fall in ...

... who has theoretically come of age)? Or is it content? As examples, we can use contemporary* coming-of-age novels such as Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld, Jim the Boy by Tony Early, The Virgin Suicides by Jeffrey Eugenides, Annie John by Jamaica Kincaid, Never Let Me Go by Kazao Ishiguro, Be ...

I'm trying to read Prep right now and deciding what other book to start. Unfortunetly, my infant hasn't given me too much free-time this week.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I ended up getting her How I Live Now, Prep and I'd Tell You I Love You But Then I'd Have to Kill You. I gave her To Kill a Mockingbird last year and it wasn't a hit. Too bad, it's one of my favorite books. She's just not ready to move on to that type ...

... kind of stuck in YA fiction with a contemporary 'high school' setting, she's old enough to read adult books. What about Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld or Motherland by Vineeta Vijayaraghaven (high school girl is sent to grandparents in India for the summer, I thought it quite good). What about ...

List first titles consisting of only one word... Kept Katherine Prep Metropolis Belinda

I am still trying to get through American Wife which I like less and less everyday and reminds me of Prep, which I hated. So, I threw in Fly On The Wall which is enjoyable and just the kind of YA stuff I need. I am also listening to Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging in the car just to ...

34. American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld follows the life of Alice from girlhood into womanhood. It is the story of how she found love, lost it, found it again, got married and how her husband, Charlie, became the President of the United States and how she dealt with that. Overall, I enjoyed most ...

... through work as a school librarian, to the courtship and marriage to Charlie Blackwell. Like Sittenfeld's first novel, Prep, the narrator's voice is compelling and welcoming. It's hard not to want to listen to what she has to say. The emotions are well-developed, and you can really ...

... d I'm pleased to report that I joined the local library a month back and this the first book I borrowed. I read Prep two years ago and really enjoyed it, so decided to try Sittenfeld's next book. The Man Of My Dreams covers similar themes - a teenage girl coming of age - although I ...

55. American Wife by Curtis Sittenfeld

... can't get enough of American Wife I can't wait to see where it goes. I really like Alice! The main character of Prep I wasn't exactly fond of but I sort of got her at the same time.

3- That's what I did too. The RH one looks so so amazing! The Penguin one looks really great as well, the second coming of Prep

I got American Wife which I am thankful for, but the only other book I have read by the author,Curtis Sittenfeld, is Prep which I hated! However, the description for this book sounds better and the main character is older so that hopefully means a whole different type "feel" to the book. Well, ...

I haven't gotten American Wife yet. But your comments made me think of the author's other book Prep which goes through the main characters 4 years at boarding school. You see a lot of her freshman year and then if i remember correctly less and less of the following years. It was sort of uneven.

nancyewhite in Girlybooks : An Orange July (Jul 11, 2008, 6:17pm)

... group read with 'Orange'. I'm starting with Case Histories by Kate Atkinson. Then I hope to fit in Oryx and Crake, Prep or Digging to America before the end of the month.

... Close, if only to really pick out the parallels in it. (I had about a year between the two, which I regretted.) I liked Prep, but I know many people did not. I was not terribly fond of On Beauty (I think White Teeth is much better). The Night Watch was lovely. I really enjoyed the ...

Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld is a pleasant story of a young girl from Indiana attending a hoity-toity prep school in Massachusetts. It is a solid read and well-written.

I've just left a desolate island in Lord of the Flies and am off to the prestigious Ault School in Massachusetts via Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld.

I finished Lord of the Flies. A great read, long overdue. Next up is Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld.

100: I enjoyed Prep when I read it two years ago. Took a break from Lucky Jim to read The Sunset Limited, by Cormac McCarthy, which I highly recommend.

... Chair and really liked it...put it off because of the reviews on LT...add me to the like pile. My next audio will be Prep by Curtis Sittenfield..what is the word on that one?

I have been lurking here for months and have finally decided to join in! I am currently reading Prep by Curtis Sittenfeld and I'm really enjoying it. The most exciting part is finally reading books that I have had sitting on my shelves. I bought this book when it came out because at ...
