An imaginary book -- too good to be real. ( )

First off, let me start by saying that this review applies only to the 2005 Sunday Press edition. There is at least one other previous compilation of this particular strip (and no doubt there are others of which I am blissfully unaware), and unfortunately, both of these books have the same title. Since they all have the same title, it's easy to get them confused if one is looking only at a description rather than the volume in question. Because, honestly, that's the only way you'd confuse this edition with any other.

This volume reproduces a large and representative selection of the Little Nemo comic strip, dating from 1906 to 1911. The strips all belong to the two or three solid story lines that McKay cooked up during those years, and this seems to be the essential feature upon which selection was based.

What makes this edition so unusual is that the strips are presented in their original color format in their original broadsheet dimensions on quality paper with solid, durable binding. This means the book is large (24" x 12") and expensive, but oh so worth it.

This book is one of the most beautiful books I have in my collection. The dimensions are right, the production is careful (like some one actually cared about the small details), and the subject matter contains only genius.

This is, of course, an art book. Though this is a strip that follows a serialized story line or two, the arc is predictable. In fact, each individual installment has the same basic narrative structure: an introductory panel with the title, the narrative body occupying the rest of the page save the last panel which always (always) shows Nemo waking up. Dull? Only if you're not looking at the pictures. And what pictures they are. Since you can find other, better written descriptions of McCay's work, I'll leave it at that. ( )

This is a nice early collection of Winsor McCay's most famous work. I respect "Little Nemo in Slumberland" for its fine art and groundbreaking influence, but I find it a very difficult read today because of the horrible lettering and the wildly antic storylines. And this book is in black-and-white, so the gorgeous art is presented to less than full effect. ( )

Little Nemo in Slumberland is a pioneering comic strip from the turn of the last century. Winsor McCay's work is fantastical and his artwork detailed and wonderfully painted.

This book reproduces 110 of these Sunday strips at full-size for the first time in history and the results are absolutely AMAZING.

If you love comics and appreciate beautiful art, this admittedly expensive book is a must have for your collection. ( )

It was the greatest comic strip of its day, perhaps the greatest of all time, acclaimed the world over for its artistic majesty, unbounded imagination, and ground-breaking techniques that helped define a new art form. But since its debut 100 years ago, it has been all but impossible to view these masterpieces in their original size and colors. This magnificent volume has become the most highly praised book of its kind. From a testimonial by writer and artist ART SPIEGELMAN: ". . . this heartbreakingly beautiful book is the reinvention of Winsor McCay - as if he was being published for the first time. Only better. " Famed graphic novelist CHRIS WARE calls "Splendid Sundays" "A wonderful thing. . . it's 'the book of the year.'" Writer NEIL GAIMAN says, "It is every bit as gorgeous as inspiring and as necessary as I had hoped." And from "Simpsons" creator MATT GROENING, "It's just amazing!"
