The Dark is Rising by Susan Cooper About 175 pages into A Clash of Kings. Finished A Game of Thrones about six weeks ago and needed a break from this epic. To me it's so inconsistent; I'll read one chapter and think it's the best story I've ever read, then struggle to get through the next chapter because it's sooo boring! But ... I don't have anything good to offer at the moment, but I am in desperate need of A Clash of Kings by George R. R. Martin. The story continues, and grows in drama and scope. Quite a number of things I thought would be predictable, weren't. I like that.
One thing I've found about these really long, fat series, is that you often get to know the characters a little too ... ... once you're obsessed there's no stopping. Book five isn't coming out until the end of the year. :(

44. A Clash of Kings, same author. Installments 1 and 2 of A Song of Fire and Ice "fantasy" series, although it read far, far more like Arthurian-type fiction just tinged with fantasy. Absolutely outstanding. Told from about 6-8 different ... I hadn't read any of Martin's books until December when a family member recommended the Fire and Ice series. I finished A Clash of Kings in a week and was on to the next book. I'm about two thirds of the way through A Storm of Swords. Really wonderful books.
I just purchased The Name ... #163 Talbin: Right now, I'm in the middle of A Clash of Kings, and given what's about to happen, my hair is standing on end! What a series! I put the book down only when my eyes are so tired they ache.
