This book is the fourth in the series 'A Song of Ice an Fire' and tt's more of a sword than a sorcery book though it does contatin snippets of what you could call magic.

As always, George has a great wealth of characters to draw upon but unlike Robert Jordan I can keep everyone straight. I think the reason being that there isn't a verbal diarrhea of description to wade through.

Something else I've also found refreshing with Martin's books is that every chapter is told from a perspective of a different character. This takes you all over the Seven Kingdoms and beyond and gives you a different voice to read in. As well, there's no protagonist, giving each reader a chance to pick their favourite.

I even found myself rooting for some of the bad guys even though they've done some terrible things. One example would be Jaime but you'll have to read it to find out why.

Martin explained why this book took so long to come out. It was originally twice as long as it is now. He said he found the book straying in a direction he didn't like. So he did a lot of rewriting and split the story in two, one part being Book 4 and one part being Book 5.

As the book is now, it feels incomplete with several characters never even getting a chapter and stories being left off abruptly. The only reason for this though is that this is really only part one.

The only thing ugly about this book is how long I'm going to have to wait for the next one. This is by far my favourite fantasy series currently being written. If you're a fan of fantasy or not, I suggest picking up Book One: A Game of Thrones and giving it a read. ( )

The best series ever. ( )

It's dissapointing for me to say this because I just loved the previous books in this series, but this book fell very short for me. There was way too much detail and not enough storyline. I really missed the characters that were left out of this book and I didn't think enough happened to the characters that were in the book. I thought the story was just crammed with dozens of incidental characters that really never effect anything except to drag the storyline to a screaching halt. I even tried putting it down and coming back to it a week later with a fresher perspective, but I still had to force my way through to the end. ( )

Maybe I just have a short attention span, or something, but I hit a wall halfway through this one and had to put it down. I just don't care how it ends, at least not enough to force myself to read the rest. It seems like only one in every five chapters focuses on a character I have any interest in, and the thread of the story is getting a little frayed, at least in my mind. I may start over when the next installment comes out; we'll see. ( )

If a one word book review was acceptable, a simple "Wow" would suffice!

A Feast for Crows is the 4th installment in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy series, A Song of Ice and Fire. This was by far the best to date. While the entire novel was engaging, the last 50 pages of the 976 total leaves the reader feeling physically and mentally abused. It's impossible to provide a decent synopsis without spoiling the story for others (and going on for 100's of pages since the plot is so rich in detail) but in a nutshell: Cersei finally gets what she deserves, Brienne doesn't, Sam is on track to become the hero of the entire series and a character we thought was dead reappears as Lady Stoneheart.

I have to admit that this book sat on my shelf for quite a while. I need to be in the "mood" for Martin. Now I really want to continue the series. Like many of his fans, I'm concerned that it may never come to conclusion. This book was published in 2005 and the "Back at the Wall" states that the next installment will be available "next year.” (2006) There's even a preview of the next book stating A Dance with Dragons is "coming soon." However, here we are at the end of 2009 and the book still has not been published. The release is now scheduled for September 2010. For Epic Fantasy genre fans, visions of Robert Jordan may be coming to mind. George isn't a young man and with the series being unfinished at this time, we may be having a different author decide the outcome of the Seven Kingdoms for us. ( )

Book description

Amazon.com Product Description (ISBN 055358202X, Mass Market Paperback)

Few books have captivated the imagination and won the devotion and praise of readers and critics everywhere as has George R. R. Martin’s monumental epic cycle of high fantasy. Now, in A Feast for Crows, Martin delivers the long-awaited fourth book of his landmark series, as a kingdom torn asunder finds itself at last on the brink of peace...only to be launched on an even more terrifying course of destruction.

A Feast for Crows

It seems too good to be true. After centuries of bitter strife and fatal treachery, the seven powers dividing the land have decimated one another into an uneasy truce. Or so it appears....With the death of the monstrous King Joffrey, Cersei is ruling as regent in King’s Landing. Robb Stark’s demise has broken the back of the Northern rebels, and his siblings are scattered throughout the kingdom like seeds on barren soil. Few legitimate claims to the once desperately sought Iron Throne still exist—or they are held in hands too weak or too distant to wield them effectively. The war, which raged out of control for so long, has burned itself out.

But as in the aftermath of any climactic struggle, it is not long before the survivors, outlaws, renegades, and carrion eaters start to gather, picking over the bones of the dead and fighting for the spoils of the soon-to-be dead. Now in the Seven Kingdoms, as the human crows assemble over a banquet of ashes, daring new plots and dangerous new alliances are formed, while surprising faces—some familiar, others only just appearing—are seen emerging from an ominous twilight of past struggles and chaos to take up the challenges ahead.

It is a time when the wise and the ambitious, the deceitful and the strong will acquire the skills, the power, and the magic to survive the stark and terrible times that lie before them. It is a time for nobles and commoners, soldiers and sorcerers, assassins and sages to come together and stake their fortunes...and their lives. For at a feast for crows, many are the guests—but only a few are the survivors.
