"The Great War toppled four empires, cost the world 24 million dead, and sowed the seeds of another worldwide conflict 20 years later. This is the only book in the English language to offer comprehensive coverage of how Germany and Austria-Hungary, two of the key belligerents, conducted the war and what defeat meant to them. This new edition has been thoroughly updated throughout, including new developments in the historiography and, in particular, addressing new work on the cultural history of the war. This edition also includes: New material on the domestic front, covering Austria-Hungary's internal political frictions and ethnic fissures More on Austria-Hungary and Germany's position within the wider geopolitical framework Increased coverage of the Eastern front The First World War: Germany and Austria-Hungary, 1914-1918 offers an authoritative and well-researched survey of the role of the Central powers that will be an invaluable text for all those studying the First World War and the development of modern warfare."--Bloomsbury Publishing.… (more)

I thought this was a good book: well documented, well written. I have read other books by Herwig and have enjoyed them all. One comment is that if you have read a great deal on the subject of WWI Germany and the Austro-Hungarian empire you will find not much new stuff. However, you will find a gread deal more depth on topics of which you are familiar. For that reason I recommend this book. Particularly if you are do not have read widely on Germany and Austria-Hungary during WWI. In this case you will learn a great deal. ( )

3727. The First World War: Germany and Austria-Hungary 1914-1918, by Holger H. Herwig (read 8 Apr 2003) This is a 1996 book, telling of the war from the other side and based on mostly German and Austrian sources. The author, while born and partially educated in Germany, is now a Canadian citizen. If you as I have suffered thru World War One histories heavy with bad news for all the time up to August 1918 this is a pleasanter book since it shows how dire things were for the other side during the time our side was so close to despair.
