Just to end on a positive note, two film adaptations I did like were Girl with a Pearl Earring and Memoirs of a Geisha, both of which stuck pretty well to the plot and did an ace job of recreating the atmosphere of the novel.
EDIT: Oh yes, and I thought Harry Potter ... MrsLee, Memoirs of a Geisha is a wonderful book, and one of my favourites. It's a smooth, quietly beautiful story that gets me every time.
I'm on the third novella in The Queen in Winter. I enjoyed Sharon Shinn's story quite a bit, but the ones from Lynn Kurland and Claire Delacro ... ... oday:

I've put Memoirs of a Geisha on hold once again to start The Picture of Dorian Gray and a few non-1001 books. I've also got Death in Venice on the top of my TBR pile. TBR pile for the rest of the summer:

It was also clear that Memoirs of a Geisha owes at least a small debt to this book, though they are very different. Memoirs Of A Geisha.
The Red Tent Unrealistic characterization. Memoirs of a Geisha is the only one I've read recently. I liked the descriptions of geisha culture (I have no idea if it is remotely accurate) and the story was fun and the ending made me happy.

As far as narrators go, they absolutely can mae a bad story better or ruin a good one. I'm not a big fan of Memoirs of a Geisha but I initially heard it as an audiobook with a decent reader- otherwise I doubt I would have finished it. Same for The Island of the Day Before- I ... On the negative side (and I will undoubtedly find many who disagree), I thought Memoirs of a Geisha was pretty bad--a western white man's fantasy of geisha-rescue. Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden ... hostel on a deserted island, was forced to read not only several Brett Easton Ellis books (which I actually liked), but Memoirs of a Geisha, Deception Point (by Dan Brown, and something else that was apparently so bad that I have blocked it from my memory. We're talking serious trauma. ... I started Memoirs of a Geisha last night and am loving it. It kept me up far too late last night. ... another one of the infamous "1001" off of your list, it's an easy and quick read.

New Moon I am curious as to whether or not either of you have read Memoirs of a Geisha by Arthur Golden. I saw the movie and loved it, thought that it was fantasic as far as storyline.
I've heard that the book is even more wonderful, and it's also on the 1001 List that I use as a guide for some of ... ... better, but that's just my taste.
Reading a bit of fluff right now (fluff=NOT list material). But next up for me is Memoirs of a Geisha. I'm reading Pride and Prejudice again... because it's amazing. A much better story set in an earlier Asian time was Memoirs of a Geisha, though I probably wouldn't recommend that for teens, either! Memoirs of a Geisha is another one that I thought didn't live up to the hype--basically a Western white male's geisha fantasy. Really tough, but the one I always always always return to is Memoirs of a Geisha. ... can make me sob, some others I just tear up at, but this was the whole, sniff sniff, sob, tears routine. Amazing.
