Work detailsA Fatal Grace by Louise Penny (2006)
Although this is not the first Inspector Gamache novel, it's the first one I've read. In a twist on the locked-room murder, a very disagreeable woman is killed while sitting in a chair on the ice among many other spectators at an outdoor curling match in Three Pines, the artsy Quebec village which Gamache has visited before. There were interesting characters and an ingenious plot, and I enjoyed the setting. Many references to events in the previous book made this a bit confusing at times and reinforced my usual practice of reading series from the beginning. (The first book is the well-regarded Still Life.) Nevertheless, recommended. ( )I love these books. They are comfort food like 3 Pines a beautiful place to come to and feel the slow paced, well fed life, with old friends and of course a murder thrown in. Last book for 2011. Was a good read too, great way to end the year :) The characters in this series are so well drawn that I'm disappointed I can't actually be friends with these people and visit them in Three Pines. The last bit of this book also effectively sets up some continuing police department intrigue that makes me very impatient to receive the next title in the series. Cosham's narration is excellent; I never have trouble telling characters apart and he keeps me engaged throughout the story. Penny also throws some interesting religious bits into this one about how different people may experience God. Listening to the Blackstone Audio edition narrated by Ralph Cosham. I'm still enjoying this series (well, it is only book two) so will continue. The books are "dense" with lots of plot, lots of character development, and plenty of literary quotes and allusions to keep people paying attention. I love the title and how the three older women in town are the "the Graces" according to Clara. The plot for this one swirls around the death of a not very pleasant newcomer to the Three Pines village. CC is mean to almost everyone and particularly viscous to her husband, child and lover. When she is electrocuted in full view of everyone attending a curling match the hunt is on for the killer. Armand Gamache is called in from nearby Montreal to investigate and is happy to be back in Three Pines. There are plenty of twists in this one but in the end I did guess right about "who dun it". You'll have to read it yourself to find out because I try really hard not to give out spoilers. no reviews | add a review
