... reads for the 101010 challenge. Very enjoyable, with delicious characters, though maybe not quite as fabulous as Carey's Oscar and Lucinda.

Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey. Good plot and characters. Good read.

Of the lot, I have read Oscar and Lucinda. I think that it is the reason I have a distaste for the Booker awards. When I finished the book I was so angered at the plot resolution that I said aloud (alone in my room), "So why did you write the goddamn book, asshole?" I have not read ...

So I've renewed and (as the title of this thread suggests) I'm very happy. I went for Midnight's Children, Oscar and Lucinda and Possession for my freebies - and they kindly threw in the diary too. For my renewal books I took My Family And Other Animals, which is wonderfully whimsical, ...

... generous. reckon I'll try and get as many of the Bookers as I can with that and the 4 books to continue ... possession / oscar and lucinda and siege of krishnapur seem most likely for that price.

I guess it also depends what you classify as 'cheerful' I love Peter Carey's Bliss and Oscar and Lucinda and I don't consider either to be predominantly sad or depressing, ditto Steve Toltz' A Fraction Of The Whole which I read and enjoyed last month. I liked Andrew Masterson ...

... but I felt the plot was uninspired and some of the characters didn't appeal to me at all. I've only seen the movie of Oscar and Lucinda and again the characters didn't appeal to me (I think I see a pattern) which has put me off reading the book. But I really enjoyed The True History of ...

I hated Oscar and Lucinda and have avoided Peter Carey ever since. Perhaps I should take the plunge and try again.

... me. The True History of the Kelly Gang was also recommended to me (by Bonnie), so I will eventually read that too, and Oscar and Lucinda. Hmmm, seems I'm compiling a huge Aussie List! I must admit always loving the girly-book The Thornbirds! It was a favorite!

... A Fraction Of The Whole and it was absolutely marvelous! It reminded me many times of early Peter Carey novels: Bliss, Oscar and Lucinda and probably Illywhacker, 'probably' because I've only read it once, many years ago, and I barely remember it - must rectify that soon. I haven't ...

Bonniebooks, I did love Oscar and Lucinda but I haven't read it since it first came out. I seem to be a more impatient reader as I get older - ...

... thing, but also a "What-are-you-in-the-mood-for?" kind of thing as well. I was reminded of Middlemarch when I had to read Oscar and Lucinda for the third time for a new bookgroup last month. pamelad in 999 Challenge : Stephmo's List (Jun 13, 2009, 6:48pm)

stephmo, I've read three of your thickies, Possession, Middlesex and Oscar and Lucinda. All of them are entertaining reads and Possession in particular just zaps along.

I'm reading Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey, The Sorrow of Belgium by Hugo Claus and am about to start I know why the caged bird sings by Maya Angelou. I'll also probably tackle The Yellow Wallpaper over the weekend.

Before I forget: I think Oscar and Lucinda is very good. Also, have you read The Member of the Wedding by Carson McCullers? It's marvellous. Well, it's taken me all year to find this thread and I'm so pleased that I have. Your comments are interesting. And I love all of the other ...

Just wanted to stick my nose in and add my two cents about Oscar and Lucinda...I read it the summer I finished high school, so I may have been too young/immature to understand it but it was a strange read for me. I finished The Yiddish Policeman's Union but haven't posted it yet, then had to reread Oscar and Lucinda for book group tonight. That is not a book you can skim, so am having to give it the same attention I would a new book. Excellent writing, but not enjoying reading it a third time. ...

Oscar and Lucinda by Peter Carey. Work commitments are denying much time to read at the moment so I'm still only half-way through but impressed so far.

Oscar and Lucinda gets my vote for originality if not oddity. It's the strangest love story I have ever read. The main character is a 'church' made of glass! My second nudge is Damage. A searing story of misdirected passion.

My message disappeared! Kevin, Oscar and Lucinda is different in style to Carey's other novels, and it's very good. I'm nudging Paula Spencer OFF your pile. It's the sequel to the amazing The Woman Who Walked into Doors but I've heard it's disappointing.
