35. The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr
Fascinating historical fiction. The story of The Turk, a mechanical chess playing automaton built in the late 1700's.
My review is here. The Chess Machine by Robert Löhr might be interesting. I bought it last fall, but haven't read it yet. Since post 10, I've also acquired:
Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino
The One from the Other by Philip Kerr
The Secrets of the Chess Machine by Robert Lohr
Armadale by Wilkie Collins
The Portable Edgar Allen Poe
Zazie in the Metro by Raymond Queneau
Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino
The One from the Other by Philip Kerr
The Secrets of the Chess Machine by Robert Löhr
#11 Just finished The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr. Really a good story. I'd love to see it made into a movie. #164: Believe me, I'm taking The Chess Machine with a largish grain of salt. A week or so ago, I just happened to read The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick which features an automaton in the first section of the book. I had not even been aware of automatons up until then, not to ... I'm working on The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr, which, when I found out is historically based and features Marie Antoinette's mother as one of the characters, magically became MUCH more interesting. ... Priest
Death on the Nile by Agatha Christie
honorable mentions -
Seven Types of Ambiguity by Elliot Perlman
The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr
Drop City by T.C. Boyle
Grotesque by Natsuo Kirino
The Emperor of Ocean Park by Stephen Carter
The Education of Mrs. Bemis by Jo ... ... Agatha Christie
Heart-shaped Box by Joe Hill
Devices and Desires by P.D. James
The Devil You Know by Mike Carey
The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr
Don't look now, but Heart-shaped Box might get the bump - by The Prestige. I'm not done with it, but it is excellent. Not much in ... ... on an Island. So far I'm bringing: Rant, Sandworms of Dune, Sin in the Second City, The World Without Us, maybe The Chess Machine, and probably something from the philosophy section. I'll probably only finish 2 or 3 of those, depending on how much wine I pack or buy on the way up.
... Yesterday I bought Keeping the World Away by Margaret Forster, The Chess Machine by Robert Lohr, and Sin in the Second City by Karen Abbott.
