I highly recommend this book. It is so well written that you'll feel transported to 1899 traveling through China, intimately experiencing the British high society as well as rural villages.
The main character is a 19th century independent woman, a Florence Nightingale nurse, who falls in love with a British aristocratic businessman. She has lived in China her entire life
with the exception of the years she trained to be a nurse.
You'll feel the perspective of the Chinese people as well as the viewpoint of the European traders, as the Chinese are helped with modernizations but their country is depleted of its resources and independence. It is historically accurate...you'll be trapped inside the walls of Peking during the months long siege.
The love story and family sagas soften the intense and frightening circumstances of the Boxer rebellion years. I could read this book again...and I never do THAT!
PLEASE recommend any similar historical romance novels.
