Biography & Autobiography. Nonfiction. HTML:

When Beatrix Potter died, few people knew the full story of her life. Margaret Lane's remarkable piece of literary detective work, originally published only three years after Beatrix's death, told her story for the first time. Extensively revised in 1985 to include new material that had come to light, and now available in this eBook format, it remains essential reading for anyone interested in the background to the author of the famous Peter Rabbit Tales.

A delightful book that gives an insight into the character and creative processes of Beatrix Potter as well as showing us her later life as a farmer and staunch supporter of the National Trust. I had not realised how much of her work was drawn from life - both animal, human and landscape. Also an insight into a forgotten and stifling world of the late Victorian middle classes and into how hard it could be for a daughter to create a life for themselves. A short but lovely book for anyone who loves Beatrix Potter's work. ( )

Such an intriguing life she had! I don't often read biographies because they are usually too filled with dull details for my taste, not the case here at all. I don't usually like the subject of bios as much as beforehand, the opposite with the story of Beatrix. ( )

Good book covering the life of the famous children's author and illustrator, written three years after her death. Interesting photos, offers a mature appreciation of Potter's art. ( )

The squares of Earl's Court and South Kensington, like those of Pimlico, have survived into the present century without much confidence.
Quotations
Camfield Place, the hideous but very comfortable yellow brick country house which Edmund Potter had adapted for himself near Hatfield ...
She was immune from the bedtime terrors of the hall at Camfield Place, where marble busts of Gladstone, Cobden, Bright and Peel glimmered like phantoms, and where she went undismayed about the dark stairs and passages.
