This was the first collection by Smith that I've read, prompted by her recently being named Poet Laureate of the United States. I liked the poems in the third section of the book best, dramatic monologues, documentary and found poems, and other poems about historical or current events. Overall, though, I was surprised at how conventional the poetry was. Smith writes very straightforward lyric poems. This isn't bad, by any means, but her aesthetic is very different from her predecessor's (Juan Felipe Herrera). ( )
