'L' autre' est un roman poétique. Andrée Chedid y mélange différentes formes d'écritures : poèmes, dialogues comme au théâtre, scénarios de cinéma, passages en italique, emploi des majuscules. Dans les premières heures du matin, le vieux Simm et son chien traversent un village paisible. Tout à coup, la lumière vacille, les murs se lézardent, tout bascule dans un tremblement de terre. Au milieu des ruines, au milieu des cris et des larmes, le vieil homme cherche à retrouver le jeune étranger avec lequel il a échangé un regard quelques secondes avant le drame. De toutes ses forces, de toute son âme, Simm tente de sauver celui que la terre a enseveli. Y réussira-t-il ?
