La Campine, l'été accablant, la soif des corps. Dans son café, Maria vend de la bière, pour Jean, que tourmente le désir d'une femme, pour Oscar, le charretier alcoolique. Maria est de mauvaise humeur, parce que ce n'est pas sa fille, la fragile Irène, que le fermier Nicolas veut épouser, mais la jolie garde-barrière Suzanne. Parce qu'aussi son propre mari, Félip, n'est qu'un buveur de lait, qui a froid même au coeur de l'été. Mais, en un an, beaucoup de choses vont changer. Blessée au visage à la suite d'un incendie, Suzanne ne voudra plus voir Nicolas, et la mort de Félip laissera la place libre à Oscar... La pluie viendra calmer les corps. La vie continuera, laissant à chacun, au coeur, une blessure. ( )
