Peu à peu, le vieux Mathieu perd la vue et son moulin depuis longtemps ne broie plus que du vide.
Les bribes de conversation, les pensées qu'on rumine pour soi seul, l'habitude des vieux amis n'empêchent pas le paysage de s'effacer peu à peu. L'ordre du village lui-même se désagrège à cause de l'industrialisation croissante, à cause des jeunes qui ne respectent plus l'autorité des anciens. Pour lutter contre la solitude, le vieux Mathieu recueille la jeune Marguerite. C'est alors que tout chavire et " c'est lorsque l'œil s'éteint qu'on commence à voir le par dedans des choses...
