Ce roman lyrique, le premier de Montherlant - il a été publié en 1922 -, a pour héros Alban de Bricoule, que l'on retrouvera dans Les Bestiaires. Alban, pendant la guerre de 1914-1918, affirme son goût du courage et du sacrifice, son ironie, son égotisme souverain. La guerre n'est pour lui qu'une occasion exaltante de se réaliser. Il lui sacrifie son amour pour Dominique, dont la passion risque de l'amoindrir. Un ordre féminin de la sensibilité et du coeur s'oppose à un ordre mâle, guerrier, et c'est ce dernier qui l'emporte.
