Tev (Tevita) is sent to Tonga to spend Christmas with his “other” family – his mother is Tongan, his father Australian. Here he encounters racism of a different kind. (He’s called a coconut – black on the outside but white on the inside) and he has two girls to choose from, but when a devastating cyclone hits- he realizes how much he needs his family back home in WA. Author is married to Tongan and he based this novel on his kids’ experiences- what it is like to not “fit in” anywhere.p.22 – 24. Tev recalls why he was sent to Tonga – the argument with his father over missing $20.
