This one took some time to get through. It's not something I could immerse myself in, as it read more like a history text than a narrative. It was also about the exploits of men that I consider to have been unsympathetic characters on quests that, well, they shouldn't have gone on. They're tough, strong men, for sure, but they are not my heroes. The only one I recommend young people be taught to admire was John Rae.

The author does acknowledge the poor judgement, greed, racism, and sexism in an almost regretful tone. But he admires the leadership qualities and the endurance and courage" of these men so much, that even when he tries to be objective, he comes across as adulatory. He can never quite bring himself to condemn any man or action.

Still, I read something outside my comfort zone, and learned some stuff, so it wasn't a total waste of time." ( )

Book description
What does it take to lead a group of men through treacherous waters, across hostile land to an unknown end? What does it take to look injury, disease, and death in the face and continue on? In his new book, Bruce Paton delves into the lives of ten of history's greatest explorers to discover both their angels and demons in an effort to truly understand what pushed them to become the greatest explorers of all time.

Join the expeditions of Alexander Mackenzie, Zebulon Pike, Lewis and Clark, John Wesley Powell and many others. Face mutiny and dissention, race against time and inclement weather, protect against enemies both seen and unseen just as these brave men did two hundred years ago. Adventuring with Boldness is history adventure at its best with lessons to guide the leader in everyone.
