I didn't rate this higher than 3.5 stars because this is really a collection of 48 plates of fashion illustrations from the 1910s and 1920s. The only real text that could be evaluated is a three-page-long introduction by Pauline Ridley that explains a brief period of time in the early 20th century where fashion illustration was not actually dominated by the photographing of models wearing the latest fashions. Fashion influences (which in turn influenced illustration backgrounds and colors) of the times are pointed out, such as the general moods felt by people during and immediately after World War I.

This little book (published 1979) and found at a used bookstore, however would be fascinating for those with an artistic eye towards illustration and those who have an interest in fashion history. I'm one of those who found it interesting to look at, and it'll make a good addition to the fashion history section of my library. ( )
