Conan Bryant Eaton (1909-1991), the author of Rock Island, lived for over decades on Washington Island. He began his painstaking investigation of the town's history shortly after he arrived in 1950, served for ten years as town assessor, and was active for fifteen as a 4-H leader. He was also a loyal member of the Island Players.

A man of words, though basically shy, Conan became the keeper of our collective past. He wrote radio scripts and numerous articles for both popular and professional journals. He also spoke often on matters historical, and along with his wife, Eelin, donated a thousand books to start an Island library. In a final gesture toward the close of his life, Conan consigned to the Island Archives the rights of distribution and re-publication of this Island Series.
