It reveals his friendships with such figures as Charles Lummis and A.C. Vroman, and traces his explorations of Southland mountains and deserts, as he stirred up support for wilderness and forest conservation. The story begins with Muir's first Southern California visit in 1877, and ends with his death in Los Angeles in 1914.
Also included are letters between Muir and his Southland friends, and newspaper articles about his visits in the area, meeting Theodore Roosevelt and Andrew Carnegie, among others. A section of places to visit describes sites associated with Muir which are enjoyable today.
