Personal Response: I really enjoyed this book in the beginning, but the enjoyment tapered off as the progression of the story begins to chunk along. At the end of the book is a short, 3-page historical note, which I found to be very informative about the immigration tension during World War 2 in both the US and Canada. I think my favorite element in the story is Ben's determination to stand up for himself in his own way. This is a good example of both life as a European immigrant, life as a Japanese-American during World War 2, and some great examples of the close-mindedness and hate that many Americans spread during the period. Grade 6 and up.
