I found this to be a good short story, beautifully written, but overall I think the translation took away from the original beauty of the story. There were times were I think the original idea was changed, as certain words and phrases didn't seem to go with the rest of the idea in the sentence or paragraph. While it only happened a couple of times, it was distracting enough to take away from the book.

The book wasn't long enough to get to know the characters well enough to like or dislike them, I do think the author did a good job developing them in such a short time spent with them. And the story was incredibly well told and developed, for such a short read.

Overall an interesting story, but I think some of it was lost due to the translation, but a good novella nonetheless.

When Angela Vicario is taken back to her father's house just hours after her wedding on the grounds that she was not a virgin, her twin brothers murder the man she names as her deflowerer. As the unnamed narrator tries to piece together what happened, it appears that her brothers were hoping that somebody would prevent the murder but as a result of misunderstandings and unfortunate circumstances found themselves forced to go through with it.

Interesting reflection on how bad things can happen through cultural inertia without anyone particularly wanting them to. ( )

Everyone knows Santiago Nasar is going to be murdered. Angela Vicario's twin brothers don't make a secret of the fact they are going to kill him for dishonoring their sister. Angela married Bayardo San Roman, but on their wedding night he discovered that she was not a virgin. He took her back to her family in disgrace, and her brothers took it upon themselves to murder the man who had ruined her honor. All through the town, the brothers search for Nasar and tell their neighbors they plan to kill him. And though the town knows they are going to murder Nasar, no one tries to stop the twins on their quest. Why does no one try to stop them? Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a murder mystery that skipped some of the mystery; we know who is going to be murdered and by whom. What we don't know is if anyone will stop the murder, since the entire town knows about it. The book makes you think about honor, loyalty, and community - and what happens when those values don't pull a town together to save a man who may or may not be guilty. ( )

In short, one expects from ''Chronicle of a Death Foretold'' another powerful dose of the fabulous and surreal. But behold! While in no way resembling conventional social realism, ''Chronicle'' is not nearly so fantastic as Garcia Marquez's earlier novels. It contains a powerfully plausible plot - a dream-like detective story, really, that pursues the questions of why and how two young men have undertaken a brutal murder that they actually had not wanted to commit.

A man returns to the town where a baffling murder took place 27 years earlier, determined to get to the bottom of the story. Just hours after marrying the beautiful Angela Vicario, everyone agrees, Bayardo San Roman returned his bride in disgrace to her parents. Her distraught family forced her to name her first lover; and her twin brothers announced their intention to murder Santiago Nasar for dishonoring their sister.
Yet if everyone knew the murder was going to happen, why did no one intervene to stop it? The more that is learned, the less is understood, and as the story races to its inexplicable conclusion, an entire society--not just a pair of murderers—is put on trial.
