Work detailsThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving
I'm sentimental about this book. It was the first "adult" work that I made a stab at (when I was ten). And while most all it was beyond my comprehension, I remember reading it in the cab of my father's pickup truck in the parking lot of Orthopaedic Hospital after having been told by my doctors that the cyst in my leg had responded to treatment. Maybe my life wouldn't turn out like Ichabod's after all? Pretty good book. The only problem with an e copy is the fragmented text. I thought this would be a taut and short horror story, but two thirds of it was a dull recounting of Ichabod Crane's idiosyncrasies and his attempts to woo a local heiress. The actual encounter with the headless horseman is brief and, for me, totally lacking in any suspense. 1/5 This is a very nicely illustrated version of "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow." It tells the story of Ichabod Crane, the small village of Sleepy Hollow's schoolmaster. Ichabod fell in love with Katrina Van Tassel, a wealthy landowner's daughter, but a strong-willed man, Brom Bones, also wanted to win Katrina's hand. Sleepy Hollow is a land that believes in ghost stories, and the legend of the Headless Horseman, and Ichabod Crane mysteriously meets his fate at his hands one night. The story itself is extensive, but it is easy to see how this could be read aloud to classes. The illustrations are seemingly watercolors, but they give children enough to visualize the characters and setting. no reviews | add a review Is contained inThe Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip Van Winkle by Washington Irving Prose and Poetry Adventures, Fifth Edition by William J. All in all, a mildly interesting and nostalgic period piece. (
