4.5 i’ve avoided this book for so long but despite it not being my usual genre i really enjoyed it will most definitely be reading more jane austen ASAP ( ) Nobody writes like Jane Austen: Elizabeth’s mind was too full for conversation, but she saw and admired every remarkable spot and point of view. They gradually ascended for half a mile, and then found themselves at the top of a considerable eminence, where the wood ceased, and the eye was instantly caught by Pemberley House, situated on the opposite side of the valley, into which the road with some abruptness wound. It was a large, handsome stone building, standing well on rising ground, and backed by a ridge of high woody hills; and in front a stream of some natural importance was swelled into greater, but without any artificial appearance. Its banks were neither formal nor falsely adorned. Elizabeth was delighted. She had never seen a place for which nature had done more, or where natural beauty had been so little counteracted by an awkward taste. They were all of them warm in their admiration; and at that moment she felt that to be mistress of Pemberley might be something! I waited until my forties to read Jane Austen. I knew that I needed a few decades of life experience - a divorce, teenage children, a second marriage, etc. - to be able to appreciate her. Oh Lord, that's not right at all! Rather it was the thought that the romances of the British landed gentry wasn't high up on the list of what I wanted to read. Eventually, however, one has to read Jane Austen, right? I wasn't wrong in my hesitation. I would rather read a David Copperfield or even a Martin Chuzzlewit than a Mr. Darcy or any of that parasitic landlord class held up as paragons while living lives of idle luxury on rents extracted from the laboring poor. Ah, ahem, excuse me. Literature can be enjoyable focusing on any strata of society, contemporary or historical, of course. I enjoyed the first half of the novel quite well. I hadn't realized there would be such humor in it, and felt quite a sympathy with Mr. Bennett. Elizabeth Bennett too is a spirited, intelligent and enjoyable character, especially considering she dates from 1813. Her rejection of Darcy's first proposal was the high point of the novel, and a good one. It was a bit hard afterwards to feel as much sympathy with the novel as it focused on the horrifying consequences of a younger sister exercising free thought and will in living with a man not her husband. It's obviously not 1813 anymore. And the novel had to get to the obvious ending point of Elizabeth marrying Darcy after all, and Jane marrying her wealthy young man, so it was no longer capable of much surprise. It was fine though. A ball is held in the hopes of an engagement between the Bingley family and the Bennet family. One person stands out and due to the misinformation, this affects judgement thus starting the domino effect of animosity among the characters. The story is pleasantly written, exploring the different gender roles in the 1800s and the women in this book standing their ground. It's endearing to follow Elizabeth's character arc. In Pride and Prejudice, Austen turned up the dial that controls the temperature of comedy, giving it some of the fever of what we would now call romance... For Elizabeth Bennet is the most frictionlessly adorable Heroine in the corpus – by some distance. And, as for the Hero, well, Miss Austen, for once in her short life, held nothing back: tall, dark, handsome, brooding, clever, noble, and profoundly rich...No reader can resist the brazen wishfulness of Pride and Prejudice, but it is clear from internal evidence alone that Austen never fully forgave herself for it... Pride and Prejudice suckers you. Amazingly – and, I believe, uniquely – it goes on suckering you. Even now, as I open the book, I feel the same tizzy of unsatisfied expectation, despite five or six rereadings. How can this be, when the genre itself guarantees consummation? The simple answer is that these lovers really are ‘made for each other’ – by their creator. They are constructed for each other: interlocked for wedlock. Their marriage has to be.
