This third volume of Hoggart's "Life and Times" stretches over three decades, from his tenure at Leicester University, via his now famous involvement in the trial of Penguin Books for publishing the unexpurgated version of "Lady Chatterley's Lover", his subsequent appointments to Birmingham University and UNESCO, his wardenship of Goldsmith's College in London and, finally, his involvement with the Broadcasting Research Unit. There is also a final chapter, "Lantern on the Stern" dealing with convictions, language and growing old.

A keen and trenchant observer of society, Hoggart leavens his observations with personal anecdotes and stories which make this book, already very well written, a delight to those who, like the author, have also lived through the cultural changes of the 1960's, 70's and 80's.

I enjoyed this book for the scale of the author's personal recollections over a period of over 30 years. Hoggart's writing is honest and serious. In my view, it is a true reflection of a well-documented life. ( )
