As far as novelisations go, this one is pretty decent. It helps that the underlying event is a fairly entertaining star trek epic, as well, as we get K vs K, Kirk vs Khan, one of those old enemies from the past conjured into being type of confrontations.

Throw in Kirk's kid, and a dead pointy eared science officer and there is plenty to keep the interest.

The novelization of one of the best Star Trek movies, in which an old foe, Khan Noonan Singh returns from the planet on which Kirk had marooned him, thirsting for revenge. Introduces Kirk's son, is chock-full of suspense and action, well-paced and well-written. Spock's death in the movie hit me particularly hard at the time, as he has been a long-time hero of mine, the death was a noble sacrifice and not a stupid accident, and at the time I believed the death was probably final.
