It took me a while to get through this book, but I'm glad i did. It argues that neoliberal economists have been exploiting global disasters around the world for the last forty years. the picture she paints is distictly orwellian from the torture ... Currently over half way in Q ... ... enjoy. Best Sellers were on BOGOF, so rather than risk picking up one book and not liking it, I puchased this, Klein's The Shock Doctrine and that day's copy of the Independent.
Between then and now I clearly forgot my 'impulse buy, abandon it if it's rubbish' plan and soldiered on with ... I know people who love The Shock Doctrine, but my impression is they love it more for the politics than the economics. I dropped out of my economics class in college, and there were parts of The Great Crash of 1929 that I had to read carefully, but it is undoubtedly carefully researched, ... #21: I may put down The Shock Doctrine and read The Great Crash of 1929 and then go back to the other book. My problem is lack of knowledge in regards to all things economical and I have no idea if Klein in Shock is on the beam or not, and not enough knowledge to refute. I am currently reading The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, Why They Kill by Richard Rhodes, and continuing with Roosevelt and Churchill by David Stafford as well as Vietnam: A History by Stanley Karnow. ... The Tales will have to be December book of the month.

The Shock Doctrine also seems like something that I would love to read. It sounds very insightful and timely. Miracle of miracles - my local library actually has Shock Doctrine! Unfortunately, both copies are currently checked out, so I had to put it on hold. Hopefully, I will get a copy soon because it sounds well worth the read. I was doing dishes with a quaker friend after our after-meeting potluck (we call it our meeting for eating) and discussing Shock Doctrine. My friend said the same thing as you. I read No Logo a few years ago and was impressed by it, so I guess SD is on the list for the 2008. But first I have ... Still struggling with Shock doctrine. It is very good but VERY disturbing, and it's not the kind of book you read while flipping pancakes.
I'm tempted to start another another book, just for entertainment. Even though I promised myself not to do this again - I've already made 8 rereads and a new ... ... since... Nov 20th?

Anyway, I checked my own posts here and can with some trepidation say that I'm still reading Shock Doctrine but have moved (mowed?!) through all of the Foreigner-books. I had no self restraint.
Not back then. Since two weeks ago I'm not allowed to start any other ... #315 - Hm, don't make me face myself, OK?! ;-)
Stage II: In Shock Doctrine a whole chapter discusses CIA funded experiments in psych remodelling and 'tape' during the 50's - research that is used to this day in interrogation etc. It immediately made me think of Cyteen. In fact, most of Shock ... I read slowly so I'll be reading Shock Doctrine for the next couple of weeks, but I've been eyeing up my next couple of books.

Clearly I'm insane. I have to go focus on some other author NOW.
*skipping off to continue reading Shock Doctrine, thinking 'next book will be Mistborn, or I'll be sent to some asylum'* Still reading Shock doctrine, plus have moved on to Inheritor in my "reread before february-quest". Those novels have proven to be almost as addictive the second time around so when I finish it sometime later today I will NOT go on to number four - I will instead work on the Naomi Klein-book ... Shock doctrine, plus rereading Foreigner in preparation for the february paperback release of the ninth novel. And seeing that my workload is soaring = less time to read in I thought it prudent to start well in advance ;-)
Good thing with the troubles I had today (see another thread...) is ... From the library, The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, Hooked by G. Bruce Knecht, Angel of Darkness by Caleb Carr, and Small Town by Lawrence Block. I am about a third into The Shock Doctrine by Naomi Klein, and I can't recommend it any higher than possible (for a starter course of her writings, check out No Logo).
I am more pissed off and upset than ever, and in the positive, world-altering mentality-way.
Books do make a ... I have Shock Doctrine waiting for me at the pick up place. Books like those suggests WE live in a fantasy world, kind of, while others don't. On this same planet. Parallel universes do exist? I'm onto The Shock Doctrine : The Rise of Disaster Capitalism by Naomi Klein. It's written from a journalistic viewpoint not a deep thinker viewpoint.
