BOOK 75: 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke A sci-fi classic about man's first steps beyond the Moon in search of extra-terrestrial life. I didn't actually know much about this book ...

#34 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clark it was a good book. It explained a lot of the abstract scenes in the movie. it's the first of clark's that i've read; i liked his narritive voice, detached but not cold. I'd recommend it to anyone who dislikes the genre Since the high realist ...

Exactly my thoughts, I have read till 2010: Odyssey Two, which was vastly inferior to 2001: A Space Odyssey and from review like yours, I know I cannot expect much from the rest of the series either, but then, if it is a series and once you start it, well, you NEED to finish it!

Finished: 12. 2061:The Third Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke. I've enjoyed the series (2001: A Space Odyssey, 2010: The Second Odyssey, and now this one, but with diminishing response. There's one more book in the series 3001: The Final Odyssey and I'll probably read that one, as well. ...

Yeah, read 2001: A Space Odyssey last year and rated it 4.5/5! This one was just not in the same league, the charaters nowhere as strong as in 2001: A Space Odyssey and Hal was disappointing. The excitement and mystery element was thoroughly missing. In my ratings, 3 is neutral, so not too ...

Hi Matt, I read my first Arthur C. Clarke last year, 2001: A Space Odyssey a very good read, and am currently reading 2010: Odyssey Two.

... kick the year off with probably The Farseer Trilogy, or the Lord of the Rings book. Actually I had just started in 2001 but I'm going to put that on hold, because of my aspiration to read more fantasy, versus the sci-fi that 2001 is.

... I especially enjoyed Pan's Labyrinth and "The Queen". I see I haven't listed any SF movies - favourites there include 2001: A Space Odyssey, Bladerunner and "The Stalker" (based on Roadside Picnic by the Strugatsky brothers).

... Choke 5. A Clockwork Orange 6. The Shipping News 7. American Pastoral 8. An Artist of the Floating World 9. 2001: A Space Odyssey

Currently, I'm reading 2001 by Arthur C. Clarke. I like the book thusfar.

The list grows, I've just started on 2001, then it's either The Lord of the Rings, or The Farseer Trilogy. Of which I prefer the lateral. But in between I could have some other books.

I'm going to be reading nineteen eighty-four. Else, I will be trying 2001. I think I have a special thing for numbers lately.

This one doesn't count as today, but tomorrow I will have 2001 and The pillars of the earth from the store, as well as Nineteen Eighty-Four from the library. So read this one again tomorrow...

... about this after reading Lola's posts in the Dune thread and she seemed to be interested in the history of sci-fi so: 2001 - I love hard sci-fi. 2001 is pretty dated, but is still worth reading. I think it serves as a good introduction to hard sci-fi as it doesn't get too esoteric. Du ...

Now reading 2001: a space odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke and just finished A pale view of hills by Ishiguro. Not his best work I think, but still pretty enjoyable.

... WILL TRAVEL, etc. Of the Big Boys, I think Arthur C. Clarke remains the most readable and relevant. CHILDHOOD'S END, 2001, a collection of his short stories, I might point a 14 year old at those old beauties and not feel I'm doing the genre (and the kid) a grave disservice.

... recommending one of the hoary old classics to someone who was just trying sci-fi*. I have though, had some luck with 2001. It's old and out of date, but I think it's a hard sci-fi book that isn't too hard for a novice. The story is weird and compelling enough to keep you reading and the ...

... be perfect to recommend but his stuff is so outdated that I guess it doesn't count anymore. Isn't it weird to think of 2001 or The Sands of Mars or A Fall of Moondust as alternate history? Still worth a read, though I guess the whole technology that is within reach today would ...

... that is. I may not enjoy Moon Zero Two (actually I probably would), but I wouldn't crucify it by saying it's no 2001. it featured a decent script and director who had a strong vision of what he was looking for-- Sounds like all of the movies I quoted above to me. None of ...

This seems to be the book of the hour here, so I have put it on my must read sometime list. Outside of the 2001 series (can't recall just how many years there were?!), I haven't read a lot of Clarke.

... Clarke could be the basis of a reading group all his own. I don't find his books worth the effort any more. A reread of 2001: A Space Odyssey was not a success. Hyperion was okay. I guess I'm almost alone in thinking Ilium was a better read. Not a suggestion, mind!

#17 2001 A Space Odyssey - Arthur C. Clarke

Booksloth in Book talk : Guess the book v3.0 (Jun 10, 2008, 1:24pm)

I shouldn't butt in on my own clues, I know, but that sounds a lot like it could be 2001, a Space Odyssey to me. ETA touchstones

...grow a quiff ...underage drinking ...see Nirvana or Morphine play live ...watch 2001: A Space Odyssey without wishing the world had been more like that.

... I'll add it to my list anyway! I've read each of these books several times: Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke Rendevous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke There are many others in my list, but most are not SF.

... books of (2) Jack Vance (Durdane and Tschai), (3) The Dune Serie Frank Herbert, (4) Arthur C. Clarke (2001: A Space Odyssey), and (5) some of A.E. Van Vogt (World of Null-A).

... I think Neverwhere the book and Neverwhere the series sort of happened at the same time (sort of like what happened with 2001: A Space Odyssey and the movie. . .). There is little different between the two.

Cliff, My suggestion before watching Wings of Honneamise: Forget that 2001 was ever mentioned in the same breath. It's a pretty good bit of animation. Very pretty and doesn't rely on the action, violence and weird sexuality that so much Anime leans on like a crutch. But 2001 quality? Nah.

Wings of Honneamise, better than 2001? Never. It's not bad, but let's be realistic here. Hey, that one isn't available on DVD any more, is it? Did they rerelease it?

HAL 9000 in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Because he's a computer, he has no feelings at all. You can't stop him. He's perfectly reasonable.

... Stand by Stephen King Tales from the Mos Eisley Cantina by Kevin Anderson The Hunt for Red October by Tom Clancy 2001: A Space Odyssey by Arthur C. Clarke Strong Poison by Dorothy Sayers The Island of Doctor Moreau by H.G. Wells The Early History of Rome by Livy Smith of Woo ...

... space stations, space walks, satellities and maybe human colonisation on other planets in the future. Don't I wish. 2001 is my favorite sci-fi book and one of my favorite movies, but it also makes me sad. Like it represents the future that should have been.

#85, rojse, "Blade Runner", "2001", "Brazil", "Gattaca", and "Children of Men" Had you never seen these before? Man, I envy you the big block of quality you are enjoying right now! Don't ask why I'm randomly picking this from the list above, but I would suggest you rent The City of Lo ...

My list: I agree with Cliff, 2001 is the current topper of sci-fi movies. If you can't sit through the movie, try reading the book first and then seeing the movie again. I dunno, it worked for me at least. Kubrick's Clockwork Orange is no slouch either. Alien and BladeRunner. I wish Ri ...

I've always wanted to see 2001 on the big screen. I am jealous!

But 2001 is only ever mentioned as the first book. For instance, you wouldn't call The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring - The Lord of the Rings or the Narnia books The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe - Narnia. My gut instinct is to agree with lorax, but I didn't want to overwrite ...

I was looking at 2001, 2010, 2061 and 3001. They have been linked together by the first book title 2001, but my understanding is that the series is actually called Space Odyssey (he was working with Stephen Baxter on a companion series, Time Odyssey). I don't want to create a new ...

What an interesting thread. I always wonder about people's usernames. My name is from 2001: A Space Odyssey -- Moon-watcher is the smartest of the group of apes in the beginning of the book. I dunno. 2001 was one of the first sci-fi books I read. I think Arthur C. Clarke is a master of explaining hard sci-fi concepts in a simple fashion. Plus, since the book is so old, it explains a lot of things that your average sci-fi reader takes for granted. I also think Childhood's End, ...

I'm not too sure about 2001. I can't say why, but it just doesn't strike me as a very good introductory book from what I remember. Dune might also be a bit heavy for an introduction, but is definitely worthwhile. I suppose it depends on what they do like to read. For example, ...

Stephen Baxter's Titan (and Arthur C. Clarke's 2001 for that matter) makes me mad at how far behind we are in the manned space program. (Baxter's Voyage will probably do the same thing once I read it.) We should be so much farther along. Baxter's affection for the space program is ...

I suppose I'd know it if I saw it. I consider books such as I, Robot, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Mission of Gravity to be "classic" science fiction. Many instances of classic science fiction include these themes: -alien(s) -spaceship(s) -artificial intelligence(s) (and often two or all ...

My first question is *why* 1984 doesn't come up on search. Does it require at least one Alpha character? 2001 also gets nothing, but '2001 a' gets lots? I'd say that needs fixed. Anyway, the reason you have different numbers is that LT can't always tell that two books are really the same. Th ...

I think the reason 2001 isn't on the list is because the movie is so well known. I don't put much faith in a list that calls Anne Rice, Terry Brooks and even Tolkien "Science-fiction". Their books have NOTHING to do with science, and are in FACT "Fantasy".

Um, I noticed that Clark's 2001 isn't on the list. It might not be the very best he ever wrote, but I think it's an important science fiction novel, along with Stranger in a Strange Land (which I reread a year or so ago and found much too dated to enjoy as I had the first time when I was in my ...

With th exception of 2001: A Space Odyssey which was basically written from the movie, I'd say, quite possibly the best movie made from a book would be 1984.
