Spender and his wife moved from England to Tuscany, and this book is about their life there. This is not, though, a Peter Mayle-style book. Spender is an artist, and it shows in the book; he is much more concerned with emotions, beauty, and relationships than getting the plumbing working in his house or other adventures typical of the expatriate-in-France/Italy/Spain literature. That is both good and bad: he tells interesting and gritty stories of village dramas and describes the architecture and history of the region, but the essays are not particularly cohesive and, toward the end, involve a strange relationship between Spender and a graduate student in archaeology.
